Atkins and Exercise

I started my exercise program about 2 weeks ago and already. I have noticed a change in the way my clothing fits me. I havent been really dieting, but I have been watching my calorie intake and have been limiting it to about 1400 a day sometimes I go over. Well I was thinking about the atkins diet. Now I know about all of the bad things about the diet, but for me. I would never eat red meat 4 times a day and eat pizza toppings. I love fish and chicken. I like cheese, but not to much. I will eat baked fish all day long everyday if you let me. Now I have been exercising about 30min 4 times a week, I try to run for the entire 30 min. I just had a baby and I am kind of desperate to get the weight off. I just want to know what you think?

Fish & chicken! For protein at least, add in the vegetables and you've got a superstar diet. I couldn't lose weight eating red meat.

Atkins almost killed me .. I did it according to the book and two weeks later I was in the hospital ... not a nice experience ...

forget atkins - it's not a lifestyle diet- keep doing what you are doing and the weight will come off.. it didnt come on overnight- it's not going to come off over night - have a little patience... you'll get there

Atkins is ok

I did Atkins for quite awhile. There are a lot of misconceptions about it. It's not a meat diet, it's not a no-carb diet. During the weight loss phase, your primary food is vegetables and protein (not just red meat). I quit because of my horrible addiction to sugar and because you must do a lot of food preparation ahead of time and I just didn't have the sustainable time for that. If you're interested in Atkins, check out the book at the library, read the whole book, and then decide.

Exercise is a major key to weight loss...so keep it up!

Im on atkins now...im feeling good other then the fact that I get this horrible craving for sugar rite before bed. but during the day im fine. I go ahead and satify my craving for sugar because i dont expect to just stop eating sugar and not have a craving 4 it.but i do limit it. In stead of having a whole bowl ill have like a half a scoop and beleive it or not it stops the craving. and i wont torture myself by not eating it.I dont expect to go from having sugar everyday to just not having any...thats cold turkey and going cold turkey will set u up for failure. I guess i really want to lose weight im tired of feeling like i have a tire around my stomach. IT HAS TO GO!!!!!!
Moderation is the key.
I just started atkins but I feel great!! my tummy is going down and I feel so good. Today i walked around the house with no shirt! (no one was home...lol)
I kept lookin in the mirror sayin "atkins you da man!"
I mean...yea i have sum ways to go. but im surely getting there.
Atkins isnt for everyone. but u should consider it. and stick to it even if u feel like u cant go without sugar cuz like all addictions you have to wean yourself off. but definitly check with your doc before doing this!!!
esp if ur gonna eat alot of red meat. try to eat fish and chicken if u do this

Thanks everyone. I am going to try cut out as much sugar as I can. And keep working out and we will see what happens

Hi! I am on the Atkins diet right now. I have been slacking in excersize lately, but all I can say it's a great healthy way to eat, and within the first 2 weeks you may lose tons of weight. But afterward it's a slow and steady loss. Anywhere from 1 to 3 pounds a week tops. I wish you the best of luck on this diet!

re: Atkins

I've been doing a version of Atkins (I watch my carbs and stay away from sugar) since January of 2006 and I had great success until I started giving into those intense sugar cravings -- it started with one "treat" a week, then two, and now I'm struggling to get back on track. I should have never allowed myself to think that I was in control of food -- I have never been and I never will be. I'm an emotional eater and the key for me is abstinence, no ifs, ands or buts about it.

No other lifestyle has worked for me -- not low fat, not low calorie -- just the low carb. It gave me energy (with little exercise), totally eliminated my hypoglycemia, and made me feel great. I kick myself for slipping up!

Heya's everyone,
I am trying low carb dieting to I am mainly eating
chcicken eggs sugar free jello a little greenbeans with my dinner
20z cheese on my eggs for breakfast and 3 pieces of bacon oh also
snacking on turkey breast (I baked a turkey xmas day)I may later on
try to add in more foods and just watch the suagars and anything
with white flour. Any tips and advice would be nice,Tammy:D

I've done Atkins before and lost 20 pounds pretty fast. The trouble is that eventually I had cravings for bread.

Wow 20lbs fast I gave it a try and I am back on my lowcalorie
way of eating it seems you can pretty much have anything just a
healthier version of it.I tried 1 day of Adkins and I was almost going
insane by bedtime lol! Goodluck to everyone losing and sticking to it,Tammy

re: low carb

It takes time to rid your body of those pesky cravings but if you stick with it they will eventually go away or at least lessen to the point of being able to resist them. I tried Atkins three times (giving up two or three days into it because of the cravings, my favorite foods then were pasta and bread) before finding success; the fourth time I was determined to control my urges and stick with it and I'm glad I did because nothing has ever worked for me. I don't even crave the pasta and the bread anymore! That amazes me, too. lol

I hope you find something that works for you! Good luck.

Good advice!

Back to the original subject... Adkins isn't a good choice if you have exercise on your mind. Your body needs carbs for exercise. Cut those out and when you exercise your body will try to use protein as an energy source, which does not produce optimal results for one, but doing this also releases byproducts which are hard on your kidneys. So, Adkins and exercise aren't exactly the best of buddies. If you're exercising, you really need to incorporate complex carbs. You can still totally do away with sugar and refined carbs such as white bread and have great results while exercising, so if your idea of Atkins is limited to this, then there's no problem. Going beyond that is where it gets questionable, if not downright bad, especially if you're strength training or otherwise doing high intensity activity that uses fast twitch muscles.

It's not good for the long haul.
