Ashstma and running

Hi guys,

I've had a past of asthma, and have been through periods in which I was out of breath all the time. Thanks to training, and joining the gym my condition has really improved. I have been working at my running, trying to be able to keep it up longer, but I've reached my limit. I worked up from a tiny 3 min to 12. The problem now isn't that I get too tired (not anymore that is, I've really worked on it) but air. After a while of running I just get really badly out of breath. I've pretty much tried everything. HIT sessions, endurance cardio at a slower steadier pace, but I always catch myself out of breath, which forces me to stop. I have talked to my doctor about it and he says the astma is to blame. I have ihalers, but they barely work. Now everyone is talking about running being the best way to lose fat.

I wonder, how about cycling? I can keep that up for so much longer, which makes it more fun as well.

Any suggestions?

I myself grew up with serious asthma but thankfully grew out of it through the years.

Running is not necessarily the best way to lose fat. The best way to lose fat is to combine diet with cardio and resistance training.

I NEVER run whether it be on a treadmill or on the ground. I get way to winded and I have found that I subject alot of my muscle to possibly being burned which is a NO NO in my book.

I do the elliptical for 45 minutes at approximatly 70% of my max HR and I have always had success burning fat.

thanks for your quick reply :) I go to the gym 2 times a week. Unfortunately I can't go more often because I live in a very small town away from villages/cities that have gyms with unlimited access. On those 2 days I do use the elliptical trainer, but because it's a popular thing, I'm not allowed to stay on it for longer than 20 mins maximum in order so other ppl can use it as well.

My diet is pretty much in check: I have managed to space out 5 meals over the day according to the guidelines ppl like Trainer Lynn posted, I drink plenty of water and green tea. But I still have flab and my abs aren't showing yet, so muscle loss is also a big No No in my book ;)

So what do you think, can I add some addittional cycling up to my cardio routine? Or maybe rope jumping (pretty good at that too) And what should I do about running, should I stop doing it all together and take a long walk instead?

Hi, I have asthma also and have had it all my life. I started running at a slow pace and now instead of going for 3 minutes at a time I now can to for 3 miles. without walking. I started run walking... 3 min running 3 min walking that was 3 months ago. I usually take a puff of my inhaler first wait a few and then go. I left the house the other night for a run with my hubby and I realized I forgot my inhaler. I started getting asthma slightly and then It went away. The key is walk breaks and slowly working up to longer running times. I can now go with 15 minutes running and 1 min walking for 7 miles. I hope this help.
