Weight-Loss Artificial Sweeteners and Insulin Spikes

So I am a big advocate of the low carb lifestyle. Recently I changed my mind when I decided that being thin wasn't worth itchy skin and tasting like a salt block.

I also read that artificial sweeteners my be causing me to not lose as fast. I read that in 25 percent of people without diabetes will experience an insulin spike after ingesting most sweeteners.

Being a low carber, I had my trusty ketostix on hand and began to cut ALL sugar out, substitute or not. What I experienced was pretty remarkable. The, once barely purple, ketostix darkened to a blood red within just a few days. Of course I suffered horrible headaches for about 4 days. After that, I lost 12 lbs in one week. Totally not healthy, and because of the salty taste in my mouth, I stopped. I was afraid I was going to have a heart attack.

I still don't do artificial sweeteners. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Perhaps maybe Steve?

Everyone will experience at least some Fluctuation in insulin levels following a meal. The degree of which is dependent on the rate at which blood glucose levels rise(along with other factors).

Honestly though, I'm not quite sure what your question is...Or what I'm supposed to have a thought about...

Also not sure what you are asking....

I've seen a few studies covering the insulin response to artificial sweeteners.... and bottom-line is, the response is variable to say the least from person to person, study to study.

With regards to sugars... they certainly don't make you fat.

You lost weight after cutting out all sugars from your diet.

Unbeknown to you, you probably also cut your caloric intake down a good bit by limiting your sugar/carb intake.

The net result is a nice loss in total weight, this being comprised of glycogen/water from the lack of glucose and fat from the energy deficient state.
