A local grocery store chain is the first to start checking ID's for the purchase of dietary supplements. Tops Markets is now posting signs that say you must be 18 or older to purchase dietary supplements. Nine months ago a concerned parent complained after his daughter purchased weight control drugs that suppress the appetite. The father was worried the ingredients could be harmful. Based on that Tops manager Todd Nettnin says the supermarket chain decided to change store policy and restrict who could purchase of these products. "Just like cigarettes or alcohol the register would prompt the cashier to do an age check and enter the date of birth into the computer and the computer would verify if they were old enough or restrict the sale if they were under age."
Nettnin says so far there has not been must reaction from customers. He's not aware of any other stores that are requiring proof of age for the purchase of these products.
