Army fitness

To all you military types out there, especially British armed forces...

I'm going for HAC selection in April next year. I do have military experience but you're never too old to learn from a veteran. I'm pretty fit but need to up the training now. Anyone got any tips about training specifically for service?

Cheers,
Stef

I've never been in the service, but I do have some advice. You'll need boundless energy, because you're going to be pushed to your limits. Make sure you get in a ton of cardio, maybe even in a weighted vest to simulate the massive loads you'll be carrying. Also, make sure your calisthetics is good as well (situps, push-ups, chin-ups, etc.)

Cheers for the advice - definitely agree with the cardio (recommend any specific activities?). I've been running with weight in a backpack/assault vest - purely because I had no idea there were such things as weighted vests. How much do they cost? And are they any good? I'd get one if they spread the weight well.

They range in price from about $60 to $120+, I believe the price goes higher as the weight does too. I've never used weighted vests myself, as I have a built-in weighted vest which I'm trying very hard to get rid of :O But from what I've heard, they're quite effective.

The poor man's alternative is to find a backpack and fill it with as many rocks/bricks as it can hold without tearing. I don't know how ergonomically sound this is. Come to think of it, before you buy a weighted vest, try to find one that specifically says it's scientifically engineered and ergonomically sound.

Any further questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Thanks a lot - I looked into those weighted vests but they're all too light! When I do weighted runs I carry 20kg at the very least. I think I'll stick to what I've been doing up to now - running with a backpack full of bricks :D

Check that site out. I noticed it, and I was like, 'Hmm, wasn't that guy looking for a heavier weight vest?'. 84 pounds should be good preparation for carrying your gear on forced marches :D

my husbands in the army... I asked ...they pack either 40 or 70lb packs, depends on what they are packing for. Careful though, its harsh on the knees.

PS. They don't use sneakers, u have boots?
PPS Use sand bags. They're easier on the gear

I have not been in the forces, but I know I have come accross website in Google that explain the different tests you will go through and how to prepare for them. I used to have a website bookmarked, but I can't find it. Good luck and thanks.

Cheers for all the advice :) Like I said I do have experience in the forces already but this company is how can I say, slightly special!

Can anyone suggest some good hobbie-type activities like martial arts etc that are good cardio workouts? I do enough swimming to keep things good on the aerobic front.
