Arginine

Pros....none

Cons....drains your wallet.

seriously, it doesn't do ANYTHING to help the weight training process, or help endurance, or make you gain muscle faster.

it does put more lead in your pencil though, and if you were actually competing as a bodybuilder, it wouldn't be bad to use it to bring up the pump and vascularity for posing.

but dats it.

I've read some articles on how it can lower natty HGH and IGF in your body. So if you do use it: it's best only on game day.

Arginine is an amino acid. It is in dairy products (cottage cheese, ricotta, nonfat dry milk, skim yogurt), beef, pork (e.g. bacon, ham), poultry (e.g. chicken and turkey light meat), wild game (e.g. pheasant, quail), seafood (e.g. halibut, lobster, salmon, shrimp, snails, tuna in water)

I hardly think an essential amino acid is going to cause all that many problems. Arginine also does a lot of cool stuff.

I do not know how much it is needed as a supplement.

That being said, it is in a lot of the supplements I take. :D

arginine is like the main ingredient in NO supplements isent it ?

correct, usually a form of arginine that is more effective. most common one I see is L-arginine AKG.
i've also read a little research that says your body can't make much use of it unless your l-citrulline levels are maintained too.
most NO2 products have no l-citrulline.

that's an interesting point mreik brought up...sounds like extended use of NO2 products can actually lower HGH levels...that's very counter productive...give yourself a fake pump with NO2 while lowering your ability to put on muscle.

The effect of L-arginine on the release of HGH was studied at the University of Virginia. Researchers concluded that arginine assists the positive HGH-releasing effect of exercise by limiting somatostatin release.

Large amounts of arginine have been used successfully with another amino acid, ornithine, to increase HGH release. Ornithine is manufactured in the body when arginine is used during the production of urea. These two amino acids may promote muscle building by increasing HGH and insulin.

However, the amount of arginine used in the study, 13 grams, caused gastrointestinal problems.

Oh Ya...

Arginine has also been shown to promote blood vessel relaxation and the regulation of vascular tone.

It can "clean your pipes" and as already metioned, "put lead in your pencil." Most natural viagra substitutes use arginine, and trust me, it works. I don't know about occasional use for stiffening, but I can tell you that prolonged use of a good argininge supplement definitely gives you wood like an 18yr old.

Not that any of us tough, weight lifting guys would ever need that.......

Save the money. Then take the money saved toward some real muscle building equipment: The mind, the food, and hard work.

I am with Malkore on this one. (miracles do happen :) )

Best wishes to you!

Clarification....

I'm not suggesting that arginine is significantly useful for weight training (some guys report good effects, others no effect), but, for us more "mature" guys it's a good supplement for immuno-support, cardio-support, stiffening agent, etc.

Its all good :) Most know I dont like supplements (other than Flax and Fish oil, and Whey Powder). But, my goals are different than most, and I understand this completely. For example, Creatine is from the research I have done on this in the past, a supplement that could "possibly" assist one in their personal goal quest, but its one I wish not to take. It is possible for example, when I was at 154lbs and max bench pressing 345lbs, that taking Creatine could have improved this max and benefited in possibly pushing out the one or two last reps that I possibly would not have gotten otherwise. However, I just like the battle between me, the food, the equipment, and hard work, to get what I want. But this is just me.

ROCK ON!

Happy New Year!

If you could post a link to that study I'd appreciate it Ted, I'll see if I can dig up mine also. Thanks..
