are supplements good for my specific workout?

Hello!
So I am about to re-start my kickboxing cardio classes, I haven’t done it since November of last year. These classes are a 1 hour workout that emphasizes on kickboxing (punching and kicking a 140 lb bag) the last 15 minutes is all abs. I currently weigh 134 lbs, 34 years old and 5’9. I am trying to add some muscle to my upper body. I’ve heard a couple friends tell me to drink some shakes to gain weight. I have a couple questions, I believe that supplement shakes give you more energy so you can burn during workouts, the more you work out the more muscle. But if I am doing kickboxing how would this help since I am not lifting any weights? I know if your calorie intake is more then your output, those calories are stored as fat. So are these shakes beneficial for my type of workout? If shakes are beneficial what do you guys suggest is a good healthy shake? Any help or ideas will be appreciated.
