I'm eating mostly canned vegetables, tuna, onions, light stuff like that and there isn't a whole lot of variety really. So for me is it really important to take multivitamins or does it not really matter?
are you using any program to keep track of your nutrients? like or one o the 100s of free sites on the web?
I'm of the belief that you should be getting your nutrients thru yor food sources, and it's not that difficult to do... but if you're continually coming up short on certain vitamins, then pop a multi vitamin.. but i've always understood that your body uses what it needs and expells the rest.... so if you don't need the vitamin you end up with very expensive pee.
Personally I think it is worth taking a multivitamin. Ideally like mal said I would like to get all my nutrients from food but being a busy student eating alot of cheap canned food without time to track all the nutrients I managed to end up quite anemic. You can buy multivitamins pretty cheaply and it's not going to do you any harm. I remember reading somewhere as well that it's pretty hard to get enough nutrients through food these days due to preservation processes etc -even "fresh" fruit and veg has fewer nutrients than it used to. But there are so many different views on the subject out there that it's hard to know who to believe! But like I said, taking a multivitamin doesn't do you any harm and it may save you some health troubles...
You can find store brand multi-vits cheap at both Walmart and Walgreen's, and I'm sure many other retailers. Walgreen's often has a buy one get one free sale at least once or twice a month.
I find it cheap insurance to make sure I'm getting proper nutrition everyday...even if I'm not eating particularly healthy some days.
I am a non-believer in multi-vitamins. I was instructed by a physician that one should only take multi-vitamin after the age of 40. Before that just try to eat more vegetables. The reason is that if you start taking multivitamins since young then your body stops extracting vitamins from food altogether because it assumes it will be 'fed' with a more readily available source anyways!
