Are jumping jacks a thing of the past?

They shouldn't be! I can remember doing them in elementary gym class, but that's about it. I see them occasionally in some military movie or whatever and the occasional fitness video will do a brief session of them.

I was jumping rope and doing some heavy bag work for boxing. today Kind of a light day it seemed so I added 5 set intervals of 100 jumping jacks then 10 burpees. It didn't seem too difficult and went pretty quickly, but then I was walking down the stairs and I could feel it in my legs already!

Jumping jacks may be old-fashioned and not as glamorous as these new trend exercises; but I think they're worth added then into a routine. Does anyone else incorperate jumping jacks into their workouts or have thoughts about the exercise in general?

I still use them in my circuit classes almost like an active recovery in between the higher intensity stuff such as burpees and squat thrusts. Plus getting people to try and complete 100 in a minute is still a good way of getting the heart and lungs working!

When you do them in groups or unison, there's always some guy messing it up. However, yes, they still do them in highschool. Remember, physical fitness is not mandatory in most public schools now. Since the introduction of SOL tests, schools focus in on those instead because they get fundings whent he score is higher so they want to dedicate more time to that instead.

When I was in ROTC, we once did 2000 jumping jacks (with breaks) over a little over an hour when we couldn't come to a consensus on another exercise. I was one of many people who yakked in the bushes outside the gym after that session of Morning Paradise. LOL

I don't think I have done more than ten jumping jacks since then, and those were only to show my son how to do them. Maybe I'll add some into the mix, just to change things up a little bit. :)

What are burpees? (I can't Google this sort of stuff from work, or I would do some internet investigating.)

You probably seen a burpee before. It's a form of up-down that you do. You basically start at a standing position, squat down, then jump up, then when you jump back down, squat again, go to pushup position, and do one pushup, and stand back up to recycle.

You can do it with a ball too.

Jumping Jacks for the Calves

In everyone of my boot camp and circuit training classes at the gym, my trainers have us to jumping jacks in between lifting weights. This is great for your overall balance and strength. I have found that after many jumping jacks, not only does my heart rate go up, but my calf muscles are much stronger. Jumping jacks can be varied as well by moving the arms in different directions. One of the best cardio workouts, in my opinion!
