Are digital counters accurate?

I recently bought a 2nd-hand York Magnaforce exercise bike and it has a digital display that shows distance, calories and heart rate. Generally speaking, are digital displays accurate, particularly the calorie count?

Varies ALOT. Does yours take into account height, weight, age and sex? If not, then I'm pretty sure it's not very accurate. If you were an average height and weight, it may be relatively close.. Personally, i've ordered a Polar F6 Heart rate watch, which should be much more accurate.

Good luck,

Well, I'm not average weight. At 5'11" my height is average but my weight is 242lbs. I a 28 year old male. So does that mean I'm burning more or less calories than the counter says? And by how many?

Should give you a ROUGH idea, take it with a pinch of salt though. You should be burning more than the bike is saying in theory.

Thanks for the calorie burn table, now I can at least estimate what I'm burning with my workout DVD (I previously couldn't factor it into my daily calories at all)...
Although I have a hard time believing that bartending/waitressing and sitting in class burn the same amount of calories... so you're right to say take it with a grain of salt.
