Sport Apparently: Whey protein has too many amino acids for me to have according to...

Yes, my darling mutter, went to H&B to get me some whey. She was about to get some when she started talking to the counter dude. He apparently said when he heard that I was 14 (9th grade/year 10) "YOU CAN'T GIVE THAT TOO A 14 YEAR OLD YOU NEED TO BE 18!!! THERE ARE TOO MANY AMINO ACIDS!!!)
Now I personally go by the fact that I'm pretty well developed and fit. Am 5ft 11 and stronger than a lot of adults. Play excessive sport, and work out often.

HOW CAN YOU BASE THIS KIND OF THING ON A NUMBER?!
He knew nothing about my diet, phsique etc.

My point is:
If a 5ft 5 man, at 36 who was not fit and had a crappy diet came along and got some, nobody would say to him there were too many amino acids, the dude at the counter would look past all this and straight at the fact his DOB was 36 years ago.
I'm not saying age isn't accountable for some things, but 14/15/16 year olds are all very different. Do you
a) think that the fact he did not allow my mum to buy any was justified?
b) know if the amino acid BS is valid or not?

thanks for listening to my rant :D

Just go to a new store.

That has to be simply the most ignorant statement i have ever seen come out of someones mouth. I would have laughed in his face had i been there to hear it in person. To many amino acids, what the hell does that mean exactly? i highly doubt he could even explain the difference between Valine, and Alanine damn idiot.

Umm, last I knew growing children needed more protein than adults???? Anyone? And are these new and exciting amino acids that nobody knows about? That you would not find in FOOD?

"Thirteen year old boy dies from eating a steak too large..." Haven't seen it in the headlines.

My problem now is that my mum is convinced that what the store guy said was true. It took hours persuading her in the first place, my dad doesn't seem to care though. So now I'm not going to be able to get any, unless I buy it on my own.

If you go by your own body weight, get to a calculator that tells you how much protein you need, and then calculate what you get from your diet and what you would get from the supplement. Yes, too much protein for ANYONE is bad, which is why certain diet fads have left us, but you NEED protein, an overdose is not likely unless you get over 30% of your calories from it... but your goal should be around 20%. If you already get that, you don't need more... If you say, eat eggs for breakfast, tuna for lunch, steak for dinner and not much else. You need to show your mother that you are going to be eating a balanced diet, not just pounding down the protein. I tried to go online go figure out if there was anything to what this guy said, all I could find was a disease all children are tested for at birth, when you genetically do not have a certain enzyme that doesn't allow you to digest a certain amino acid... she would already know this about you.

So basically, you need .9 to 1 gram of protein per kilogram body weight per day. Figure that out, show Mum this thread, and let her know you are making an informed decision. Then when she lets you get the protein drink, follow the instructions and don't drink three servings in one shot K? Good luck to you on this one...

Thought at 14 I have to wonder if you actually need protein powder. you are still growing, so your focus shouldn't be on hardcore training right now.

keep lifting, but keep it fun for a couple more years. fully finish puberty before you start getting into supplements...particularly because they are supplemental to your diet. supplements are 100% optional...don't get hung up on thinking you NEED protein powder. if mom won't buy you whey, have her buy you steak, or chicken, or eggs, or lowfat cottage cheese -- protein is protein, and natural protein is technically better.

If you really want the protein why not learn more about it, learn more about amino acids, figure out why that guy would say what he did, prove him wrong with, and show your parents how educated you are on the subject. I dont know your parents but I'm sure if you impressed them they would take you to another store.

And if that fails, who cares its protein, a supplement, you dont really need it anyway.
