Anything to stop chlorine from destroying suits?

Well....it's time to take my $150 triathlon suit and put it in the trash. Even though I rinse after each swim in the gym's pool.....it's finally delaminating or decaying. Rinsing helps, but being in the pool for 1.5-2.25 hours is still exposure.

Why do I wear the tri-suit in the pool? Cause I like to track my heart-rate & calories burned and the chest-strap won't stay on without my chest being covered AND the suit gives me a place to stash my underwater ipod player. I suppose I'll have to figure something else out.

Just the same...has anyone heard of any product that can be applied to a bathing suit to make it more resistant to chlorine decay? I know they have stuff that makes clothing more water resistant, would that stuff also help seal and protect lycra/nylon?? Anything????

I don't think anything can take the constant abuse that pool chemicals and urine dish out. I've gone through a few wetsuits as a testament to this. Maybe you could try wearing relatively cheaper spandex/lycra shirts with a custom made pocket. That way it doesn't hurt as much when it's time to toss them.

I dont really think there is much that stops the chlorine from chewing through them rinsing is your only option really. I used to leave my speed trunks in a bucket of water when I wasnt using them but it didnt seem to help all that much. You could always alternate using them and not using them.

I dont swim in a pool that much anymore is basically all open water swimming all year round.

I wear a cheap 15 dollar pair of swim pants. I had it since I was about 10... and now I'm 24. Of course, I never used them for exercise before, but I find it surprising they lasted this long.

In the ocean? I live in VA Beach, and I'm scared to go to the beach and swim. I'm planning on investing in a wetsuit, hard fins, and a good mask. The problem isn't so much as swimming, but rather what would happen if I got caught in a current or animal attack. I'm a magnet for animal attacks. I'm the first person to actually get attacked by the petting goat at Busch Gardens, or so says the keeper who been there for some odd years.

Hahah - swim naked...that's too much drag man!

I have recently switched to a suit made locally that seems to be holding up very well to the chlorine and I am surprised!

Somewhere out there...at Dupont or some other place, they really should be working on a fabric or fabric-guard that can seal the material better. Oh well, thought I'd ask.
