Anybody take JUST Casein?

I've read about one of the members long protein posts but was curious if anybody HERE has just drank Casein throughout the day, rather than drinking whey before/after a session.

Seeing as how your wanting to keep your levels always in the black, I was wondering if anybody could explain to me if just drinking Casein say like 4 times a day would benefit in constantly keeping your levels positive, rather than just fighting to keep it positive by getting fast absorption right before or after.

I know diet will keep the levels up as well, but I'm talking strictly protein shake-wise here.

4 shakes a day of any protein is too many shakes.

casein doesn't mix well, which is why its not as common to be used straight.

anything that keeps you in a positive nitrogen balance is good, whether its whey, casein, a blend, or steak & eggs.

My take on protein shakes, or any supplement, is to take it when eating a meal isn't exactly practical. So, I'll take a whey shake after a workout because my body needs the protein, but because of my schedule, eating some chicken at that time of day doesn't work. In that situation, my understanding is that whey is the better protein because it is fast digesting.

As far as keeping your protein intake steady throughout the day, shouldn't your diet be able to do that? I don't see drinking casein shakes throughout the day as having any sort of added benefit.

My new schedule, especially come Christmas time, doesn't really permit me eating high protein meals as often as I did in the prior months, regardless of how small they are. I simply don't have the time to allot the 6-7 small meals. And the only way I'll be able to get the 1.5-2x my body weight in grams of protein is by drinking 4 shakes in addition to my 3 meals.

My workout regimen has also changed from being what it was to 4x FBW per week. And when I say FBW, I'm talking actual gymnastics training on rings, floor tumbling, pommel horse, and squats. Gymnastics has always been an intrest of mine and I found a local gym whose luckily enough has the ex coach of my GF (both used to be competitive gymnasts)!. Figured what a great way to build the high body weight to strength ratio I've always wanted, and gain flexibility. Not to mention, get my GF back into gymnastics and her possibly even teach.

So a shake is what's gonna have to do in between the breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And the Casein mixes VERY WELL with milk, and tastes even better than the whey. Figured the slow absorption rate of the Casein would help keep my nitrogen levels sufficient since I cannot eat as much/as many small meals.

keeping your blood amino acid levels elevated for long periods is probably not a good idea.. you want to let it go down between meals.

I use a casein whey blend as PWO and I take a small dose of whey in between my meals

milk is awesome, lots of bioactive peptides and stuff. A few epidemiological studies have actually shown that milk protects against a number of diseases.
Nothing experimental though, so we can't know if the results were confounded.

I was jabbing joebedford who posted that casein "promotes" cancer.

Since about 80% of the protein that is in milk and cheese is casein I would assume he believes they cause cancer as well.

A Wikipedia page on casein has one reference to a cancer study:

It includes this quote which basically sums up something we all know -- protein is good for ya'.

"Irrespective of level of carcinogen and feed intake, the high protein diets promoted generally improved well-being and prolonged the survival period from an average of 28 weeks to over 40 weeks."

The summary of the study discounts what the poster stated. Rats fed a diet including a carcinogen and lower amounts of casein developed cancer at a higher rate. As casein was increased, the rates appeared to decrease and the rats were more "protected" from the carcinogen. However, if the amount of carcinogen was increased as well the protective effect of the protein was decreased.

Casein is a good supplement protein.
An attractive property of the casein micelle is its ability to form a gel or clot in the stomach. The ability to form this clot makes it very efficient in nutrient supply. The clot is able to provide a sustained slow release of amino acids into the blood stream, sometimes lasting for several hours. This provides better nitrogen retention and utilization by the body.
But it is better to go green, meaning natural intake of foods with default protein content on it.

Hey Karky,

I would be interested in hearing about your PWO blend. I have heard a 80/20 ratio being used before.

Is this what you are doing?

Thanks.

it's a pre made thing.. I'm pretty sure it's 80% whey and 20% casein.

Cool, thanks
