Sport Anybody else have trouble making consistent gains?

Sport Fitness
Hello everyone,

I'm new to the boards and relatively new to bodybuilding (about 5 months). I've been fooling around with my MT line to find the calories required to gain 0.5-1lb a week and after several weeks, I thought I found a happy balance.

Last week, I gained a pound at the calories I have now, (about 3400). I jumped on the scales this morning to discover that I gained 2 pounds! I was a bit puzzled as these are the exact same calories that I used the week before. Is it water? Fat?

If anybody has any input, feel free to answer.

Thanks so much,

Hi Safeboy43,

It could be a number of things, such as :

Last week was more stressful, so your metabolism was much higher.
This week you have worked out less / not put in as much effort, and so the calories burned were less.
Your body could be retaining more water this week.
You may have drank more water this week than last.
The scales are wrong ! :D

...and the list goes on.

I have reached many sticking points in the past, and the usual path of correction is to take a step back from it all, take a break for a week, eat well but cheat a little, and get back on the weights the next week.

Don't fret, it's 2 pounds. Your weight can fluctuate 5-8 pounds over the course of a day, so it could just be something like extra water weight, or waste in your system.

I weighed 2.4 lbs more this morning than I did yesterday morning...probably just some weird water retention..or more solid waste in my system like MMW said. It happens

Indeed. Just thinking about it, I have made it a point to drink 8 or 9 glasses of water a day recently so it could be some water retention. That combined with feeling a bit tired this week and not performing 100% at the gym could have contributed to the extra pound.

A bit off topic here, but does anybody else here use Fitday to calculate their calories required? If so, do you find their numbers fairly reliable?

Thanks again everybody!,
Safeboy
