Five Ways to Help Your Overweight Child
The former U.S. Surgeon General, Richard H. Carmona, issued a call to action in the fight against childhood obesity. Here are five ways he suggested parents can help their kids keep healthy:

1-Let your child know he or she is loved and appreciated whatever his or her weight! Overweight children need support, acceptance, and encouragement from their parents.

2-Focus on your child's health and positive qualities, not his or her weight!

3-Try not to make your child feel different if he or she is overweight. Instead, put your energy toward gradually changing your family's physical activity and eating habits for the better.

4-Be a good role model! If your son or daughter sees you enjoying healthy foods and physical activity, he or she is more likely to do the same.

5-Don't try to make an overweight kid drop pounds. An appropriate goal for many overweight children is to maintain their current weight while growing normally in height.
