Any medical coders out there?

Hi, I was just thinking about taking a medical coder class so I could possibly get another part-time job. I've done it before, but that was in the military and it doesn't count so...... I was just wondering if anyone on here is one and could maybe tell me if it's worth it? Or if the pay is good? Thanks!
 
my brother went to school for medical billing and coding, and couldn't land a job afterwards...so much for the job placement guarantees. :/

instead he got into computer aided drafting, without any education, and is doing better than he projected.
 
I know a lot of people who work in the medical field and I have heard that medical coding jobs are hard to come by because (and no offense, because I don't even know what it really involves) the position can be filled by "just about anyone".

Like I said, no offense, but that's just what I have heard from my friends in the business.
 
oh none taking! It is a super easy course, so I should have known. Nothing that is easy is worth it. It's cool though I just got a call back tonight about a paramedic job with my local 911 disbatch, the one i was waiting on, so it looks like that's gonna be my other part-time job. I love all the craziness anyway. I'd prob get bored with the coder job

Hell yeah! And trust me it's the freaking most awesome job! but seriously I have alot of passion for emergency medicine and I'm doing what I love. Blood and guts and pure craziness, i love it. I get bored easily so emergency med works for me, so what about you?
 
I just finished my EMT-B and now I'm doing some courses to be an ER Tech. I've been debating going further into EMT-Paramedic. Here they just don't make enough!

I agree... Emergency medicine is right up my alley too! That's so awesome... I love medics! lol. The personality of medics is truly "different".
 
yeah, if Paramedics made just a little bit more I would seriously consider it.

Yeah we do have different personalitys! My husband finally got used to mine lol, I work in a level 1 trauma center down here in ga, and I love it. But i missed working on a squad so now I'm working with local EMS every other weekend. The money insn't great, that's why you have to really enjoy what you do ya know? It's not cut out for everyone. Congrats on you're EMT-B! you are gonna love being an er tech! Just ask around to find out which hopsital in you're area is the trauma center and apply there, you'll get the most action, and you'll love it!
 
Yep, I already do my clinicals at a few different trauma centers. The problem is, with this economy as you know, there are no jobs!! I'm so bummed...
 
I totally understand, when I moved to GA back in June it took me 4 months before I got a job! It was crazy, plus they couldn't match the pay that I made in Nebraska so that sucked also, but what do you do. Hang in there!
 
No problem, and you do the same! I feel like i could write a book on all the shit that went down in Omaha when I worked there!
