Hey there, im somewhat new to the whole losing weight thing. Im currently 18 and weigh about 170 pounds. I am trying to lose my excess body fat and turn it into muscle. I eat fairly decent and try to exercise but i cant seem to lose any more weight, i have lost over 30 pounds doing what i am now but its not working anymore. Any suggestions on how to get around 8% body fat or so?

It is very hard to lose weight and build muscle at the same time. Check in with some of the guys on this site. They may have some suggestions for you.

scubasteve (i love adam sandler, good choice for a name!!!) i would suggest uping yur exercise and increasing your weight training (if you are doing it? if not, well then start, get ripped man) keep posting and welcome to the site buddy!

lol yea i love adam sandler also. i do work out but i dont do it very intensely. i never understood how to get "ripped" anyone have some suggestions on how i could do this? thx for the welcome

"Getting ripped" is a slow process of lowering your body fat %. I'm not completely sure, but as far as it was explained to me, your body uses carbs for fuel first and fat deposits last (with protein in between maybe). Someone can clarify that, but I think that's the gist. When you get within a healthy weight range, you should not focus on how much you weight, but how you look and feel. Losing muscle mass is a good weigh to weigh less, but comes with those undesirable results.

You should watch your carb intake to be sure it's not too high. It should still be the largest percentage of what you eat tho. Try to get carbs in the way of vegtables and whole grains. Eat a good amount of lean protein while you're strength training too. Keep in mind, your body can convert protein to fat as well, so be sure you're not taking in more calories than you can burn during this process.

Most importantly in the process is your exercise. It doesn't need to take you hours on end to lower your bodyfat. You should be working out intensely though. You should ramp up to that, and a personal trainer is probably the best place to start. They can usually get you started for a pretty reaonsable fee. I'm not promoting an injury here, but you should be totally spent when you leave the gym. Maybe start with 1 day on -- 1 day off till you can increase that to 3 days on -- 1 day off.

Like I say, I'm in no way an expert, and I'm currently working towards the same goal as you. Great job so far, and good luck in the future. :)

so what are some low intensity cardio things i could do to burn the fat? when i do cardio i usually run about 2 miles in 15-20 mins. Is this considered high intensity or low? what other kind of cardio could i do at lower intensity? also, should i eat before or after cardio? should i do high intensity cardio before or after workout? what are some high intensity cardio exercises? thanks for all the help so far? :)

Retaining muscle while losing fat

I'm pretty new at the weight loss thing as well. my husband and I started a week and a half ago. So far so good. We did lose some inches on measuring the 1st week. The program we are doing helps you retain the muscle while losing the fat. From what I understand, keeping the muscle helps you burn more fat by keeping your metabolism up. We are also going to start exercising next week. I used to be skinny, then when we moved to Florida 2 years ago, I didn't exercise. So, 2 years later and 30 pounds heavier, I know I need to do something.

high protiens like chicken and turkey along with tuna and eggs are good to diet onalong wiht lots of low fat dairy and veggies and friuts and whole wheats and grains, and slowly increasing your wight over a long period of time will build muscle. good luck man!!!!!

Had the SAME problem.

Hey Scubasteve (love the name)! Im 16 years old, an active athlete, and I am still facing the same problem you mentioned above. Fortunately, I have found a solution that is extremely successful and I would love to share it with you and anyone that may read this thread.

About 2 months ago, I discoved a health solution by the name of Isagenix. It is a fairly new system (about 5 years old) and it is still continuing to provide excellent results. I was just like you. I had found a working program that continued to keep me in great shape and great condition, until it suddenly stopped working. I found that this was caused by the many toxins present in my body. The human body naturally produces fats in order to trap the toxins our body takes in from our food and drinking water. As a result, you can only burn so much fat before reaching these "toxified" fat cells, which can't be burned off or the toxins will be released in the body. Isagenix has a solution that cleanses the body at the cellular level, using 100%, all natural ingredients, including vitamins and minerals, some of which haven't been seen by the average human being since infancy. By reintroducing these ingredients into the body, it is given the nessicary "tools" to eliminate these toxins from the body. The elimination process takes around 9 days, but I lost 1-1/2 pounds the first day, and another pound the second day, all in waste material. After the cleaning process, I took vitamins provide by isagenix and began working out.

Most people could continue their previous workout routine, cleanse every month, and see extremely satifiying results. But unlike most people, you and I wish to build up lean muscle mass while keeping the fat off. Well, Isagenix has a lean muscle product that utilizes whey protein and other ingredients in the form of shakes. These shakes aren't McDonalds delicious chocolate shakes, but they do provide a satisfiying taste and very satifying results. After cleansing, the body can absorb the protein more efficiently, thus providing you with the desired results. Just replace a meal everyday with one of these shakes and in no time you'll go from scubasteve to sexysteve.:).

If you are interested in Isagenix, please visit my info site at I loved it so much, I signed up to receive their products wholesale!!! You can sign up to buy wholesale and receive your own site too!!!

One last thing, If anyone would like to email me personally about steps I took outside of the program, send me a message at roberttyler_06@hotmail.com
