losing 100 lbs would still leave me overweight. so like 133 lbs to normal. ugh
Every diet I seem to put on instead of take off weight.
What is the best way to lose when you have a lot to lose ? My gym says to eat small meals and not count calories, eat only healthy foods with protein/carb at each meal and 2 veg a day. I like convenience foods tho and need something that will absolutely take off weight.
They also suggest 3 + times a week of 30 min cardio and 45 min weight training. 20 reps times 2.

Your gym is wrong. You have to count calories..least at the start. Weight loss is all about calories in vs calories out. There is no food that will take off the weight and there is no amount of exercising that will counter a bad diet. Think of this..which is easier and more likely: Burning 1000 calories a day or reducing your diet by 1000 calories a day? My suggestion is start a food diary for a week. Write it all down to the last crumb. Try to also write how you are feeling emotionally before and during eating (a lot of weight problems come from using food for comfort) as well as portion sizes if you can. At the end of the week, look back and see if you can't make better choices. Also check sites like fitday and calorieking to learn about calories in different foods.

You can only get away with not counting calories if you have done it enough to know what you're eating.

If you're 133 lbs overweight, it's very likely that you don't have an idea of what an appropriate portion of food is. When I started counting calories, I was really surprised by just how much I was overeating. I was eating portions that were double or triple what is normal and thinking that's how I was supposed to eat.

If you want to eat convenience foods, go for something like canned tuna in water, or other types of canned fish (in water, not oil). Boil some eggs. Microwave some veggies or eat them raw. Eat low fat cottage cheese right out of the package. Eat raw fruits. Eat small quantities of nuts. Eat small quantities of bread/cheese/lean meats.

In the end you can lose weight on anything if you eat less than you use. But to do this you have to count calories at least initially, until you get an idea of how much you should be eating.

A food diary is a great idea, also get a scale to precisely weigh what you are eating.

As the previous poster said, diet is key. Exercise is important, but it's unlikely that you'll be able to burn as many calories by exercising as you would by cutting calories in food. An hour of moderate intensity on the elliptical machine would burn you about 500 calories for example. To burn 1000 calories a day for the 2 pound a week loss you'd need to do 2 hours of elliptical every day. I started out doing that, but I injured myself and had to stop.

thank you for the replies. I am not in physical shape to do an hour of anything really.
You have some good ideas about cal counting. Many years ago, when I was at a normal weight, I just ate. didnt count calories or exercise. But I found time for daily exercise. Sadly, since about 2002, I have been looking for the right plan and when I mess up. I give up. I last a day or two and give up. So much wasted time.
TY for your advice I will try being stricter. I think I may still need to eat a frozen dinner a few times a week tho, as I am so accustomed to that.

I wouldn't say counting calories is the only way to do it, but that's what worked for me.

I think it's best to make small changes. To start with, you could just start listing the food you eat during the day, without actually trying to limit your calories. You may find that simply being aware of what you are eating will help you lose a little weight. One idea I heard was to take a picture of all your food with a cell phone camera before eating it.

Go ahead and have your frozen dinners (though I can't understand why anyone would like those). Add a little bit of exercise at a time. Don't go overboard.

You can work up to it, just do it gradually. Start working on your flexibility too as that reduces the likelihood of injury (leg muscle flexibility especially).

You may find that as time goes on your taste buds will readjust and you will not want to eat a frozen dinner. I used to be an absolute junk food fiend, but I haven't had it all summer and while at first it was hard to go without it, now my body adjusted and no longer craves it.

If you've been eating a lot of processed food, your liver may be struggling with toxins and this may be impeding your metabolism. Maybe you could try starting with a detox for a day or 2. Just drink fruit/vegetable smoothies for a few days and then switch to a lower cal diet and see if that kick-starts things.
