ankle pain

22, male, 5 foot 9 200 pounds. I am in the worst shape of my life but Im trying to get back into my work out routine. Although when I run I get ankle pain in both legs that sometimes rides up to the calf. Ive tried 3 different kinds of shoes but nothing seems to work. I do the same stretch routine that Ive done in the past and it worked fine.

After a mile my ankles and calfs are shot so I cant go any further even though I have the energy to keep going. What could be the cause of this?

actually I mispoke. The pain is in my achilles tendon not the actual ankle.

Maybe you're not stretching enough? I get pain in my legs too if it has been a while since my last run. Once you get into routine, it'll probably either go away or you won't notice it.

I had the same problem in one leg until I got shoes that control my over pronation... since then no more achiles problems... check out new balance... then have a good explination of foot pronation... get whatever shoes you like... but the new balance shoes I got have fixed my problem with my achelies tendon getting sore...

I also used to have the same pain but I was overtraining, running 5+ times per week.
As jsobo mentioned, also once I got shoes that addressed the pronation of my foot (Asics Gel) that helped alot also.
I was like you and thought I needed to stretch more but it didn't help much. Actually stretching after running helped me more than before running.
Just my experience, take it for what it's worth.

agreed!

stretching before didn't help me much either...

Find a store that has people who know about running... and get some help... have them let you try on and run in a bunch of shoes that are designed to deal with pronation (if that is your problem)... find ones that feel good...

Other things you can try for the achilles tendon - before you run, do a light warm-up first (like a light jog) or even apply a heating pad to the tendons first. Also, to counter over-pronation, try to remember when running the following: (1) do not strike the ground heel-first, but rather with the mid-foot to balls of the feet, (2) concentrate on keeping your knees pointed forward throughout your stride, and (3) try to push off of your big toes.
