American Gangster

So just going way off-topic really...but did anyone happen to see the new movie called American Gangsta? I went this past weekend, and I thought it was quite well done!

Denzel Washington does a tremendous job acting as the real life American Gangsta Frank Lewis. The movie is based on his true story, where Frank smuggles Opium drugs into the USA from Thailand, on board military planes and basically becomes filthy rich doing it.

It is amazing how he tries to keep his ties with his family, and a regular lifestyle to keep him from becoming a suspect with Russel Crowe who plays a New York cop named Richie Roberts in the film.

It is really an amazing storyline, and in the end you feel quite sorry for the family and Denzel Washington - even though he kills people throughout the movie to keep his ploy hidden.

I definitely reccomend going to see this movie!!!!

that's really quite a statement - that the movie makes a gangster out to be sympathetic?

I went to see this about two weekends ago with my boyfriend. I thought it was an okay movie. I do like Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe, but I was borderline bored until things started going down the last 30 minutes. Especially when $8.50 is the matinee price for a movie around here... I went to see Martian Child the week before and thought that was a more enjoyable use of my money and afternoon. Nonetheless, it's a true story and I don't know what parts were fact and what parts were made up, it's still impressive that someone was able to pull that all off. And while I didn't feel bad for Denzel's character, I did feel bad for his family who looked up to him, to his lead, and trusted him that he was making the right decisions. That part was sad.

My personal take....

Morning,

I really wish Hollywood would stop glamorizing crime and gangsters. It's really a sad commentary about our society as a whole.

YMMV,

Barbara

I loved this movie too. I think it illustrated police corruption very well and how good people do bad things that in turn make them a bad person. I saw it with my dad and aunt who aare pretty critical - and they both gave it two thumbs up!
Go see it!

Well most of the people in the movie were eventually killed or either went to prison, nothing glamorous about that, seriously, who would admire death or jail time. I think the movie is a great way to let people know that you may get away with it for a while but eventually you will get caught.

I totally agree... that movie blow... I love how he gets away with it all in the end.
