Am I losing weight too fast, almost 3/4 lb a day.

Hi

I started a new diet after an flu like illness back in early October. When the diet began I weighed in at 345lbs now I weigh in at 275 lbs, a loss of 70 lbs in a little over 90 days. Almost 3/4 a pound, and it has shown almost no slow down. I lost about 5 lbs this week alone. I consume about 1,500 to 1,900 calories a day with an average of about 1700. I do get some hunger during periods of the day, but nothing significant. I eat 3 times a day, I eat a 300-400 calorie breakfast, a 400-700 calorie lunch, and a 500-1100 calorie dinner. I workout about 20 minutes a day on an elliptical, with low to moderate resistance.

I was reading you should aim for 1-2lbs a week, but clearly I am losing a lot more than this. At first I thought this was good, but now I am getting a bit worried. Should I be worried, or should I keep doing, what I am doing.

I read if you lose weight too fast you get more loose skin, is this true?

I don't know about the loose skin issue. From my limited understanding, losing weight fast is just not letting your skin adapt fast enough, but your skin does continue to adjust even after the weight loss has stopped, so I don't think it actually matters. In the end, though, depending on how you carry the weight and what weight you end up maintaining, the only option may be surgery.

But the amount of weight loss is relative to your starting weight and height. Losing 10 lbs in a week at 350 lbs isn't that drastic. Losing 10 lbs in a week at 150 lbs would be extremely drastic. Your caloric intake is actually really good, so I can assume that the weight loss will slow the closer you get to 200 lbs and then you would probably get closer to the 1-2 lbs / week.

My goal is to get to 189lbs by Jan 1 2018, which would put me at a 24.9 BMI. Before I got sick I was 355, lost 10 lbs and then I started my diet. So I have lost almost half the weight I need to, if I haven't seen really any lose skin yet, does that mean I likely won't see much loose skin?

I don't really know. All I do know is that your skin is constantly changing, but as far as how rapid loose skin will go away, I have no idea. I think it really depends on how you carry the weight and how long you have been at the top end of the weight.

I see. I will say even if I have tons of loose skin, it will be better than the eventual alternative, being dialysis or worst dead due to obesity related diseases.

That's an excellent mind set. Good luck to you. Hope you stick around and keep us informed with your progress.
