Am I doing this right

I am 5 Feet 1.5 inch.Currently weighs 158 Lb.I am want to lose 40 Lb and reach my target weigh of 120 over the next six months.

For the past 4 weeks I have been excersing for 5 days a weeks . I do cardio for 60 minutes each day ( 30 minutes running at average intesity of 3.8
& 30 minutes on cross trainer). I also use the weight machines on all the 5 days. totally lifting a weight of 2450 Lb per day over 10 machines.

Am I on the right track. When I started I was 160 Lb and have lost just 2 pounds. I donot follow a diet plan but I limit oil, fried food, sugar etc and eats brown rice. How can lose weight a little bit more faster?

Will it make a difference if I run or do the cross trainer for a longer duration
? Do I need long runs? Also is the weight training preventing me from losing weight?

I think that you are definitely on the right track. 5 hours of cardio plus some weights is lots of exercise. From the weight training you will likely gain a little bit of muscle weight, but that's a really good thing - as more muscle will increase how many calories your body burns naturally and boosts your metabolism.

Try increasing your intake of vegetables and fruits (but mostly vegetables). Also try to avoid eating too much bread, rice, potatoes and pasta (sounds cruel, I know) and replace these with foods that are lower on the glycemic index.

For bread, try pumpernickel and sourdough.
Rice - eat basmati and brown rice
Sweet potatoes/yams instead of regular potatoes
Brown rice pasta (health food section of grocery store or at health food stores).

One thing I don't have is patience - keep it up and be patient. But don't burn yourself out at the gym.

How long would it take to see a marked difference

thanks for your asusurance, but I am just wondering how long would it take to see a marked difference in weight if I continue this way.

I would think that within 8 weeks of starting that you should definitely notice some good results. One thing I always lacked was patience it was always painstakingly slow to shed pounds. You definitely have an exercise routine that will work - you just have to keep it up.

Next I would look at what you are eating, how much and when. The absolute ideal (IMHO) is six meals a day, each with good quality low GI carbs, lean protein and vegetables/fruits.

One of my biggest problems is portion control. My lunch is probably a little bigger than most people's, but I'm still a little hungry afterwards. And dinnertime is a real problem - I can eat massive amounts of food for dinner, which is bad, bad, bad.

Try to eat smaller portions more often rather than three larger meals.

Does whey protein help?

I have been reading a lot about whey protein. Does it help lose weight if taken immediately after work out or does it bulk you up?

I am hungry enough to eat an elephant immediately after my work out and want something filling and yet wont make me put back all the calories I excercised hard to lose.

The whey protein will help your body recover after a weight workout and will help build muscle too. Both of which are good things as more muscle burns more calories. And if you're concerned about putting on too much muscle, don't - it takes years of intentional work to do that. No one works out a little and then, oops, I've put on huge amounts of muscle all of a sudden. Believe me, I tried for years to put on a lot of muscle, and it's a ainfully slow process.

The other side of it is that it is calories, and too many calories are the problem. But, you do have to eat. If you're starving after the workouts, whey protein is a good way to get have something.

To sum it up, the whey protein is extra calories, but it does a lot of good for you as well.
