I understand some of the reasoning behind not drinking your calories--you might not compensate by eating fewer calories, many drinks are "empty" calories, etc. But what about 100% whole, natural drinks like orange juice, grapefruit juice, and vegetable juice. If you find it hard to eat the proper amount of fruits and vegetables each day, wouldn't it be better to drink one or two of these drinks? (And I know you have to read the labels very carefully and avoid added sugars, high fructose corn syrup, etc.)
