Alternatives

Hi. I'm new to the forum so before I get started I'll just say hi.

I used to do a lot of running - regularly doing 10k runs and running about 4 or 5 miles a day until last year when I injured my knee and had to have an operation. My knee has never fully recovered and recently I have been back in the gym trying to rebuild the fitness and the resistance to road running but as soon as I hit the road, the knee is pretty much screwed for weeks afterwards.

I'm very tentative about running in the gym now in fear of damaging the knee further. Now the problem is that I am having troule losing the weight I have gained since last year (I am now 14 stone 7 (203 lbs) and 6 foot 3. So I'm about 20lbs heavier than I would like to be but it is proving quite a challenge to shift. Running used to make life so easy to stay in shape but now I find X training and Rowing just don't quite have the same impact on my body that I used to get.

So to the runners on this forum, do you have any advice? Anyone had similar problems? How can I go about getting this 20lbs gone with some exercise that won't leave me on crutches or worse.

I'm really after advice on how long and vigorous to do the routines for aswell. Hope I'm not asking too much on a first time post.

Thanks in advance for any contributions :)

May not answer exactly but cycling would be helpful, if it doesnt cause problems with your knee. If you want to lose weight, hows your diet? Losing weight without the proper fuel will get you nowhere.

Again something I could do with advice on. I used to eat quite a lot but then I used to run a lot aswell. Some general all round advice would be good. It's finding a starting point I think that works for me that is the hardest part. Once I find that, I'm set to go

Well your weight to your height seems relatively good, maybe you just need to tighten up your body. Try to balance your diet with a good amount of protein carbs and fats. Eat 5-8 smaller meals per day, trust me it works. I eat 7 times a day and consume about 2500 calories on average. I would also try some weight training, look around in the diaries, healthy recipe section, and just the forum in general for great tips that have been passed on and can be used by you.
