Alternatives to going to the gym

This is going to be a long post haha, but please comment with your thoughts! Growing up, I stayed active and fit by going to dance class. I started when I was three, and made it into my studio's company at age 12, which meant my hours in class went from around 10 a week to close to 40, so there was no problem with me not getting exercise. Recently, I've cut way back on my hours training at my studio due to trying to earn my degree, so I've taken up going to the gym over the last two years as a way to keep that active level high. Almost four years ago, I started doing aerial dance as well, or the kind of things circus people do like silk work, trapeze, etc. This has been an incredibly fun way to really strengthen my arms and my core. Dance has always been one of the main forms of cardio I enjoy and it tones as well, so it's a win-win for me. But it's also something I can't do the rest of my life.

Now, while I enjoy the physical benefits I get out of going to the gym, I also think it's pretty boring just using machines all the time. I was wondering what alternatives to just going to the gym for cardio or strength training you guys participate in that I should look into so my workouts can be more exciting once in a while. Any alternatives or info would be great!

Who told you that dance is something you can't do for life? If you need proof otherwise check out Wayne Sleep, still going strong despite surgery and being a good deal older than either of us.
I did ballet and contemporary and have stopped due to lack of time and having to select the training I enjoy most and can fit in.
The key is find stuff you enjoy as priority. I have done various things including boxing, Aikido, dance, weights, circuits, running, cycling, climbing, pilates, body pump and other random stuff. If you like dance and circus skills keep doing it and find stuff to support it, that usually keeps you motivated enough to do it. Try a variety of stuff and find what clicks.

Here's a presentation I had to make for my online English class. It talks about a different way to strengthen and get a workout without going to the gym. Hopefully you find it informative and interesting!

Swimming and cycling is a good exercise and can help us to lose weight. It is a full body exercise that can tone your muscles and helps your heart rate up. Swimming is a part of my weekly routine. DH and I went to the public swimming pool every Saturday morning. Swimming is fun to do also.

Bike riding does the trick for me. It's a happy change from the (like you said) staleness of being around machines and inside a building.

Yep, a good run or a cycle work for me - I love the fresh air and picking nice green routes. Swimming can also be fun - that's a proper work out for your whole body.

Surfing helps me lot, doesn't feeling like exercising at all! Bout wow oh wow. The transformation it has on your body in such a slow time is amazing! I am all for things that don't feel like exercising at all!
