Is an occasional beer okay? like I have not had a beer in two weeks (so happy lol) and my gf just got a promotion so we are going out celebrating.. im only planning on having one, maybe two drinks.. is that okay even if I am trying to lose weight?

thanks!

Everything in moderation. It's obviously not going to help you, but a couple lights aren't too bad.

One or 2 beers to celebrate something that does not come along for most folks very often will not hurt your diet. Have a beer and celebrate your gf's promotion. On the other hand, if you previously had a drinking problem, and this will cause you to fall off the wagon and revert to old ways, then of course it's not such a great idea.

I agree with that. If you can stop at just a couple beers go for it. Just don't let it turn into a 3000 calorie binge drinking session :) Which is why I don't drink often, once I start I don't stop. Easier not to drink then to burn off the extra cals lol

you only can have 1 light beers in a week if you're tying to lose weight, 1 bottle about 150 calories ( I think) and 1 shot of hard liquor is about 100 calories.. I think the things that you have to concern about drinking alcohol is the "one more' syndromes...lol you can't go to bars and just get one drink especially when you're celebrating something, soooo many excuses.. :) Good Luck!

Really? Is this scientific data? You can drink as much as you want, its up to that individual person and THEIR weight loss goals to decide how much they can and will drink. I'm not saying going on a drinking binge once a week is any good for them, or going to help them in their weight loss goals, but telling someone that they can only have 1 beer a week before their weight loss efforts are negated is silly. If i have 2 or 3 beers tonight (just an example) I can do an extra workout tomorrow to account for the calorie intake. It's all in the balance. Will it be easier to lose weight if you're not drinking at all? In terms of calorie balance yes, but in terms of sanity probably not. haha.

To the OP: If it's not a typical recurring event, then have at it. 1 big drinking event in a year won't kill your efforts but don't make it a habit.

A beer or 2 is alighty in my book. I think alcohol has 7 calorie per gram vs carbs only have 4 calorie per gram. Like others said, moderation is the key. Oh, if you are getting really fit, your tolerance might be lower than you think so have a designated driver handy. At least for me, I seem to absorb the alcohol and get drunk a lot faster now that I am fit.

It definatley wont hurt. You're doing so much more work than your body is used to, that a few extra calories one time isnt going to hurt.

BTW congrats to your GF. :)

Basically moderation is the key

Basically there are two main points in this thread that are key:
1. Moderation
2. Don't drink crap beer

The way I look at things is keeping it at a "zero-sum." IOW, if I drink 2 pints of Guinness, I've got 410 calories I need to burn off somehow. If it's BMC (that's Bud/Miller/Coors since they all basically come from the same horse) it's about 96-110 calories per beer for the "Lite" version. Figure about 105 calories for light beers and 150 for regular beers.

Here's some short education on exactly "how" alcohol affects your metabolism. I thought this was interesting with my past studies in microbiology and of course, beer. :beerchug:

How Beer Makes You Fat
(reprinted from the March '07 Men's Health)

1. You take a swig of beer.

2. Within seconds, the beverage passes through your esophagus and into your stomach.

3. Twenty percent of the alcohol is absorbed from your stomach into your bloodstream; the rest is absorbed from your intestines.

4. The alcohol travels through your blood to your liver, where it's broken down. During this process, waste products called acetate and acetaldehyde are created.

5. Acetate and acetaldehyde signal your body to stop burning fat. At the same time, your body starts making fat from another waste product of alcohol, acetyl CoA.

6. Your body can effectively process only 0.5 to 1 ounce of alcohol per hour.(A 12-ounce beer contains about 0.6 ounce of alcohol.) SO THE MORE YOU DRINK, THE LONGER YOUR BODY IS INHIBITED FROM BURNING FAT, and the more fat builds up from the excess acetyl CoA.

I cannot successfully have any sort of alochol and maintain a diet. Once I drink a couple of beers I lose all willpower and start cheating by eating cheese and crackers, pizza, or any other junk food I can get my hands on.

Just to add to this, according to my nutritionist, nearly everything you eat while drinking alcohol gets turned into fat. so when i do splurge and drink, i make sure i do not eat any food.

Of course after the "lecture" on how alcohol affects your body (very well summed up in Charlie Golf's post) I have been scared to touch it.
