Weight-Loss Alcohol?

Weight-Loss

Hey everyone, just a quick question, what's the deal with alcohol, good or bad? I drink maybe twice a month, and even when I do I don't drink a lot, because I just don't like having a hangover :L

My Dad/mates and I, usually like to meet for a few pints on a Friday. Is it ok to have 2 or 3 a week? I'd usually have maybe 5 or 6 usually but since I'm trying to lose weight just wondering what I should keep it to, if anything at all

I drink Guinness if it matters or not

Thanks :)

The general consensus on alcohol seems to be 'less is better' when dieting. Not only can dark beers be high in calories, but the alcohol not only slows your speach (lol) but also your metabolism.

2-3 beers per week could easily fit into your caloric schedule, just be sure to plan accordingly, and then STICK TO THE PLAN :)

My biggest problem with drinking is that I lose my inhibition to eat more!!!!
Yup.... to hell with counting calories when I'm drunk, just pass the damn chips, pizza, cake, burgers, or whatever else is on the menu!
(Am I the only person with this problem?)

if you have to...

if you have to drink here's some options that are close to zero calories

vodka and club soda
vodka diet soda

clear liquors are better than dark liquors, light rum less cals than dark etc. this is obviously not reccommended though because the hang over will impede your cardio the next day! ;-) but hey we've all done it. :-(

Yeah, replace your pint of beer with 2 or 3 vodkas...that's the idea. :banghead:

Just for the record....a pint of guiness (568 ml) contains about 170 kcal. The typical Vodka with diet coke has roughly 56 kcal in 175 ml. That puts a pint of vodka + diet coke at 181 kcal. So no 'close to zero' option at all.

What dwwise and monster said pretty much sums it up - Make room for it in your calorie allowance, and don't have too much. I don't see the big problem with having 2 pints once a week.

Might be worth checking if there is a 'light' version of Guiness - not light as in less alcohol, but less calories. Not sure if that stuff tastes any good though, I've just seen it in an advert over here.

I'm the same way. I can plan my calories so I can drink a fair bit but as soon as I'm done drinking I want to eat!

Yeah, me three, but if I do need to go drinking I just budget enough calories to get so drunk that I pass out instead of binge once I get home :)

vodka has no carbs

vodka has no carbs, the calories are all in alcohol, which gets you drunk, not overweight. it enters the bloodstream more than your digestive system. That's why many hardcore alcholics are not massively overweight. Weight gain with drinking comes more with the foods we eat or things consumed with the drink such as sodas.

Really? I find that hard to believe. Most alcohol is made with sugar. Vodka is alcohol.

some where in this link it says there are 55 calories in a 25 shot of vodka.

"enter's the bloodstream". Well everything enters the blood stream from the digestive system which starts off in your mouth, your oesophagus, you stomach, and then your intestine and finally your colon.

Weight gain also comes from the alcoholic drinks we consume. Wine is quite high in calories, as is beer. I met a woman who told me she lost 20kilograms in a year when she gave up drinking. Of course she had been eating too but it seems that drinking was the main problems. I've seen many hard core alcoholics who are obese. Here we have a a thing known as the beer belly which men get who drink a lot. These men don't actually necessarily eat a lot but they do drink a lot of beer.

A calorie is a calorie. Vodka is high in calories.

Hardcore alcoholics are not overweight because they don't eat. Nearly ALL their calories come from alcohol. They usually have a tendency not to eat healthy either, if they eat at all.
THAT is why they are not overweight.

I think 2 drinks is fine on the weekend. I think vodka and diet tonic water/soda with lots of lime is better. I also try to make it low-calorie vodka like belvedere or voli spirits

And getting massively drunk, causing trouble and hooking up is still pretty awesome :p
