Airplanes - a nightmare for big ol' me!

I am leaving for Europe on May 5th (THIS MONDAY!)...I have lost 23 lbs since the last time I've flown (around Christmas), but I am petrified the seatbelt won't close!!! Last time I flew (Southwest), the seatbelt fit into the clasp but wouldn't stay closed.

While I know the obvious thing to do if an airline seatbelt doesn't fit is to ask for a seatbelt extender - I just cannot seem to bring myself to do this. I know I should not be ashamed because I am working so hard to become healthy....

Any advice? Anyone over 250lbs ever flown Delta and had any problems? I've looked up all the planes we're taking and am fine with seat size, I just can't find seatbelt lengths!

Sorry if this seems totally paranoid, I am just so antsy I can't stand it! LOL!

when i was 383lbs - my ass basically fit in a seat - with some spill over but nothing awful - I would need an extender to get the seatbelt closed though -just ask for one - as you're boarding the flight attendent will provide one.

Southwest they are far less kind - and will generally make you pay for a second seat

Thanks maleficent! I weighed 320 when I flew over Christmas, and I'm down to 296-297. I'm hoping I should be fine - I contacted the airline and Delta said their seatbelts are between 35-38 inches in length - and me, using a handy-dandy tape measure, measured across myself pretending it were a seatbelt, and it worked fine without even pulling it tight. Hopefully my little simulation works in reality, too!!!

In the meantime, thanks so much for the answer!

for transatlantic flights the seats are usually a little bigger - which would make the seatbelt slightly bigger by proportion.. but - it's a long flight and dont' make yourself uncomfortable -ask for the extender if the belt is tight

I will. I can't wait until I don't have to worry about this type of thing anymore. My fiance and I are travellers through and through, and having this extra weight is a pain in the butt - and for airlines like Southwest - in the pocketbook! Fortunately, I've never been forced to or suggested to buy/pay for an extra seat. I hope I never need to.

southwest did it to me once... on a flight that wasn't even half full (they eventually refunded themoney but it was part of their policy - at teh time, I was flying close to a million miles a year - for multi years... I never flew them again...

Isn't there something wrong with Southwest enforcing that, lawfully? I think it's discriminatory, personally. I mean, granted, small people might like their space - but what about when they recline? It makes everyone behind them miserable then, skinny or no....

Ugh.

it's part of their policy - any airline can do it - if a person is big enough to not fit comfortably in one seat -the airline has the right to charge that person for two seats... it's only fair to the person who might have to sit next to them who's paying for a full seat and the person next to them is flopping over.. (I always tried to keep m y flop to myself :D

Reclining - what i've been told -isn't an issue because you can recline your seat and get the same amount of space (I don't agree with that but - that's what I was told)
