Sport Agave Nectar

I went to my local Wild Oats store this weekend and they had some homemade energy bars made primarily of ground nuts. Anyway it was sweetened with agave nectar. I believe this is what is fermented to make tequila, but I never heard of using it as a sweetener. I bought all the ingredients and noted that the label said it was low GI. I looked it up and one site had it listed with a GI rating of 11.

Does anyone use this? Sounds pretty cool to me, although I'll still use it very sparingly since it's still an added sugar
 
I'm going by Wild Oats tonight as a matter of fact.

if you don't mind, give me some ideas of things you liked to pick up there.
 
I always get the whole wheat pitas, aduki beans (they're canned, but with no salt added) my wife gets some hummus. Then I'll just look around and get anything that may catch my eye. They have a whole aisle with bulk grains and nuts. They also have a big supplement area
 
I've used agave nectar once, and that's because I just tried it out last weekend. It was used in bar cookies and they still tasted pretty good. And it made them turn out smooth.

I know agave nectar dissolves well in cold liquids, and can be put into many things. What are you using it for?
 
I have never heard of this sweetner before your post, Gooch, and I am going to do some research and reading on it.

The very first article that popped on google was this one, and it was rather "promising", but I am going to read some more on it. Looks okay thus far. It does carry a warning message about how Fructose reacts to raising blood sugar present (say from other foods consumed) and how it can change the GI from its original low GI to a higher GI (I am not claiming this is the truth it is just what the article states, I am going to read some more on it to educate myself).

Fructose has a low glycemic value. However, according to some experts, if fructose is consumed after eating a large meal that overly raises the blood sugar or with high glycemic foods, it no longer has a low glycemic value. Strangely enough, it will take on the value of the higher glycemic food. So exercise restraint, even with this wonderful sweetener.

hhmmm... I used it for some homemade "energy bars" made primarily of ground nuts with dried fruit. I used 1/3 what the recipe called for so it was only like 4 grams per bar. I just needed enough for the mixture to be sticky so it would be solid once baked
 
I wonder how agave nector would pan out in comparison to these energy gels... these things go down soo heavy. maybe we could come up with a concoction that would be better and yummier, and with more of a boost for the endurance...

I use hammer gels, Gu, and Power bar gels.... I've been working on gettin my body good at all types so that any race I can use their products.... but a ziplock bag of somethin we make may give me som pride for the Ironman event.

From what I've read so far, the gels are supposed to give a quick bump in blood sugar levels then continue to sustain that. The one I looked at used 80% complex and 20% simple Maybe you'd have to mix agave nectar with dextrose
