I'm 18 years, 6'1" and weigh 190 lbs. I'm a freshman in college so I don't have access, nor the funds to get all the fancy supplements, eat incredibly well, etc. I'm looking for a way to develop toned/cut muscle in an affective way, but it doesn't have to be uber-affective.
Currently, I consider myself to be in good shape. I have a good amount of muscle on me, I have pretty good endurance, and I keep a set routine. I try to eat 3-4 meals per day with about 20-30 grams of protein per meal and about 300-600 calories per meal. I base my meal around, usually, lean meats like chicken, and drink a lot of water. I might have candy or a soda on special occasions or once per week. On occasion (and this is one of my questions) when it's late at night and the normal food place isn't open, I grab a 2 slices of pizza. I dab the grease, and when I can I try to get the healthier option. I was wondering if this is severely impeding my progress.
My main question, though, revolves around the workout/post-workout routine. Currently I lift weights 2 times per week for at least an hour, and drink two juice-box-sized cartons of muscle milk after that (40g protein/300 calories). After the main lifting I also do about 5 mins of concentrated ab workouts.
One or two days out of the week I play basketball for at least 45 mins or an hour. I grab a smoothie/drink 1 thing of muscle milk afterward (~20g protein).
Now, also about 2-3 times per week I swim approximately 1200 yards, going pretty hard. Before swimming I do 10-15 mins of abs and after abs and swimming I drink one thing of muscle milk.
(after all of these exercises I always drink water)
My question concerning abs first: is it more appropriate to do abs before or after a workout? When I lift, and do abs after, I feel the burn A LOT more as opposed to swimming (doing the same stuff).
My other question revolves around whether or not I should increase/decrease protein intake, drink more water, eat fruit, etc... I don't really know exactly what I'm doing. All I know is that you should consume protein as soon as you can after working out.
So yeah, that's it... I'm hoping I provided you guys with enough info, let me know if you need more information.
Thanks
