Advise needed - getting married in 8 months

Hi , i have recently joined SlimmingWorld and am a memeber at a gym - I struggle massively with weight (size 18) I am fed up of being so weak when it comes to food so I joined sw with the groups to help with giving me a kick up the bum ! I really need to loose as much weight in 8 months as possible - any ideas on how many times to go gym ? Some ppl say 3-4 per week others say to go 6 days ? There's a pool at my gym as well so maybe switch it up ? Any advise would be appreciated thanks

Hi Suzy, welcome to the forum! I'd suggest coming over to our diary section: https://weight-loss.fitness.com/forums/weight-loss-diary.9/ and making a diary. It's the most active part of the forum and there are some truly lovely chaps and ladies on there that will support you.

I'd recommend swimming, 100%. Full body workout, kind to your joints and fun! I wouldn't be going 6 times a week though, although some sort of exercise every day is good! They say around 80% of weight loss is diet ..how will you be changing yours?

If you can do 6 days / week and think you can maintain it, then go for it. Having a pool allows for a greater variety of exercises to stop from burning out.

No matter what you do, remember that weight training is extremely important for weight loss. Your muscles are the furnace the burns the calories. More muscle = more calories burned. It also gives you that nice fit look instead of the "skinny-fat" look. I would do 2-to-1. 2 days of weights, 1 day of swimming, repeat, and then 1 day off. If that's too much, then maybe weights, swim, rest, weights, swim, rest, rest ... or weights, weights / swim, rest, weights, weights / swim, rest, rest.

Thank you that's a great help - I always thought cardio was the way to go - but I will go to the weight machines I also have my own weights at home I can use . I'm hoping with clean eating and this routine in 8 months I ll feel and look better for my wedding !

Thanks
Suzy

Cardio is good for the heart and lungs and it isn't something that should be ignored, but you will have better long term benefits to weight loss if you focus your time on weights.

A good weight training program burns as many calories as what most people do on the treadmill, elliptical or stationary bike because they go at a very steady (often slow) pace, so an entire workout on those cardio machines doesn't burn that many calories.

The exception is if you push yourself to do something like HIIT or spin classes. If you push up the intensity, then it's worth it, but that's not what most people do, so I tell them to skip it other than for warming up.
