Hello i would like to ask a couple of questions please if someone could help me out.

Im currently classed as obesse and need to lose alot of weight. The thing is im not sure if im doing it the correct way.

Basicaly im 18stone 7lb 258lb i think and i really need/want to lose 4 stone 56lb in 6 months before i get married.

I have a soft spot for all the bad things coke sweets chocolate fried food etc.
So i have cut all of this out in the past week no snacks nothing unhealthy and drink atleast 4 pints of water.

Whats confusing me is if i do weight lifting with normal exercise will my fat turn to muscle as there is so much of it (fat) or will i lose weight 1st then gain muscle.

when i weigh myself things are confusing like my bmi can go down but bodyfat rise. Then my body fat drops bmi rises im confused.

I dont mind being muscle but will this stop me from seeing my weight drop, like today i weighed more then 2 days ago but the body fat dropped. what the hell i diet but weigh more or the same.

Can someone pls explain whats going on with my body. Should i stop weight lifting and just stick with diet and walking riding (cardio) exercise.

Then when my fat is gone weight lift, or should i just do both and hope my fat goes and muscle gains is this possible ?

Do spend some time reading the stickied threads arouond the forum.. you've got a lot of misconceptions that need clearning up

1. Fat is fat muscle is muscle -Fat does not turn into muscle.
2. It's not l ikely you will gain muscle while eating at reduced calories, but weight training is a good thing to do while losing weight so as to not lose existing muscle.
3. BMI is an ridiculous indicator of anything... it takes your height and your weight and that's it -doesnt take into considerataion bone density or muscle mass... If you've got an accurate body fat measurement go by that.

Take measurements -get a 99 cent tape measure and use that as a guide....

Not everyones body is the same...but in my opinion, keep lifting. When I first lost weight I did it by lifting and diet. I didn't add in cardio until I was about 130 lbs, got down to 118, and now am back up to 127 (but that's besides the point). Cardio was too boring for me when I first started working out and weight training was all new and I could do something different every day, so it worked well.

Huh?

Look, M4DM4N, don't take this the wrong way, and I'm not trying to be insensitive, but are you trying to lose this weight for yourself or for your bride to be?

If the only reason you're trying to lose weight is so you'll look good in a tux, well, why go through the bother?

On the other hand, if the real reason you want to lose weight is for yourself and you want to make this a life long commitment to stay in shape, then you're doing it for the right reason.

So do you really know for sure why you decided to lose weight and are you sure you're ready to do what's necessary?

Because this is going to be a damn tough row to hoe for you from what you've indicated in your post.

The first thing you have to do is give up all the crap that's making you obese - all the bad things coke sweets chocolate fried food etc.

Not for a week, 10 days, or 6 months, but for the rest of your life.

Are you willing to make that commitment before you start?

Thanks for your replies.

Doc well if im to be honest im doing it for both of the reasons you mention. If i wasn't getting married then maybe i would not have decided to take on the challange.

Problem is im morbidly obesse i smoke and im asthmatic so yea in the long run its for me my kids and my partner. People here will understand when i say i want to play football with my kids and not feel like im going to have a heart attack. Or that i can play fight without bursting into server sweats.

I'm fedup i can't find clothes i cant look smart i feel bad about what ive done tomy body.

I'm also due to get married and i want to look nice for my future wife in our pictures i dont want to feel ashamed of my body or let her down.

Getting married pushed me towards making a change like if i had a heart attack.

i lost 6lb in 5 days and feel good i get this rush after excercise like a drug pumping thru my body.

P.s the 4 stone in 6 months yes is so i look good on my wedding day but that does not mean ill go back to eating crap like before i want to change for life. If i step up to it then i can change my childrens life and eating habbits to.

OK I can try to clear up some of the confusion because I think I understand what part of the problem is. You mentioned your body fat going up in a matter of a day or two. That tells me you must be using a scale that also displays your body fat percentage. If this is the case, please ignore that number for a long long time. Those body fat scales fluctuate several times a day based on how hydrated you are. Plus, they are very inaccurate for most people.

You are 256 lbs now, correct? I was 251 lbs when I started my journey on June 1st, 2008. I was an athlete when I was younger so I was tempted to just jump right in and bust my ass. Then I thought it through and realized I had so much fat to lose and I was so out of shape that I had better just focus on losing weight at first. Forget about the muscle for now. When you are losing weight in a healthy way you will be losing mostly fat. Unless you are starving yourself you will not lose a lot of muscle. And you almost certainly are not going to gain muscle. If you do it won't be a lot and if anything that would be a good thing.

The first 6 to 8 weeks I simply did about 20 to 40 minutes of walking on the treadmill 3 times per week while maintaing a low to moderate heart rate intensity for at least 20 to 30 of those minutes. I also lifted weights for 45 to 55 minutes 3 times per week. I alternated upper and lower body. I also ate 3 healthy meals with a snack in between each meal. Doing it this way I lost 2.5 lbs per week for 12 weeks. As I lost more weight and got in better shape I began to challenge myself more and more.

For right now just worry about losing weight. Trust me, most of what you will lose will be fat so no matter what that darn body fat scale tells you, your body fat percentage IS going down. Also, don't worry too much about BMI. You already know you are overweight and that is all the darn thing is good for. A lot of men look too skinny with a BMI under 25 anyway. So don't think you need to get to that number. Just don't worry about BMI right now, or maybe ever. LOL Also, in your case I would recommend only weighing yourself one time per week because weight can also fluctuate from day to day.

Just focus on losing weight through healthy eating, cardio and weight lifting.

Can you tell us about your current excercise and eating habbits?

Then you're motivated to lose weight for the right reasons, M4DM4N. Being around to dance at your son/daughter's wedding is a powerful incentive.

Okay, first things first. Don't go cold turkey and try cutting all the bad things coke sweets chocolate fried food etc. out all at once. That's a sure recipe for failure. Instead, try dropping one bad habit at a time.

Get yourself a notebook and start journalizing every day. Mark down what you did positive that day. "Didn't drink any coke today. Drank 4 glasses of fresh water instead".

If you relapse, don't worry about it, turn it into a positive. "Ate some greasy fries today and I felt like crap. Will have a large salad tomorrow to make up."

Stuff like that.

See, when you put thoughts into words, it's easier to turn those plans into action.

I wouldn't worry about weighing myself for a month either. You're too insecure about your weight at this point and too prone to start feeling miserable if you don't see the numbers on the scale heading south.

Instead, rely on the mirror and the way your clothes fit. Stand in front of the mirror without your clothes on and tell yourself your waist is getting smaller, your biceps firmer.

It has nothing to do with narcissism, but rather reinforcing positive feedback for your efforts.

Getting that interview with the gym is a major positive step. Make sure you mark that down in your journal.

Keep us posted on how things are going. That's what we're here for.

Good luck.

Good advice. Only thing I noticed with your diet is maybe not enough protein, particularly in the morning where I see none. Also, make sure you are not cutting your calories too much. I think adding a small healthy snack in between breakfast and lunch, and especially between lunch and dinner, would really be a good idea even if you are not hungry. I'm talking under 200 calories and NOT junk food. For example, a slim fast shake and a bananna or a fiber one bar or something like that. As long as you are expending at least 500 calories per day more than you are consuming. You will for sure lose at least one pound per week and possibly up to 2 lbs per week depending on your caloric deficit. Too much of a deficit can be too hard on you though, physically and mentally, and ultimately defeat you. That has been my experience in the past.
