hello im new to this so sorry if i sound stupid.i am 50 year old male and fat.i am 107 kilos.i am 5 foot 6. i want to lose weight.Am i right in understanding that to achieve this i need a calorie deficit of 1100 a day.
so my normal intake to stay at this weight is 2800 kg a day.so i would have to take in no more than 1700 a day to lose a kg a week.is this correct.?? also if i did this and lets say i also burned 1000 a day through jogging,i would lose more weight. Or eat 2800 calories a day and burn 1100 a day would also mean losing 1 kg a week.any help would be great thanks

Hey Daveyboy69,

You are correct when you say that you need to be at a caloric deficit when you want to lose weight. Think of it terms of calories being energy and 2800 cal a day diet. You started the day at zero energy(calories). Lets say for breakfast you had a meal from Mcdonalds that was 2800 calories (say two mcgriddles, 2 hashbrowns, and 2 orange juices). You pretty much had a full days food in one sitting, and if you eat more you are going to begin storing that energy as fat! Now, let's then say you ride your bike at an intense pace for an hour after that meal, and you burned 1000 from your energy bank. Now, you are at a caloric deficit of 1000 and you now stand at 1800 Calories for the day. At this point you will lose weight, if you do not go over 2300 Calories (2800 - 500 = 2300). Does this makes sense? Calories in Vs Calories Out.

TySmith, yes i get it now.just one other thing.it sys men should have at least 1500 calories a day.so lf 2800 a day is to stay at my weight, and i reduce my food so im eating 1800 a day, i also ride my bike for an hour and burn 1000 calories,it would then be 2800 - 1000 from food - 1000 from bike ride = 800 which is well below the 1500 a day minimum.

so ,i will try and explain it better.if my daily cal intake should be 2800 a day to stay at my weight, and i reduce this to 1800 a day by eating less,it would mean 1800 is a safe amount of food intake for that day.they say 1500 to 1800 a day is ok.but if i then run for an hour and burn 1000 calories, it wouöd mean my daily calorie is 800 even though i have eaten sufficient food.

Yes you are also correct, you could eat a little more to get to the 1500 minimum. Afterwards, it's a bit more "complicated" than that, minimum calories are different for everyone. It depends on your physical activity level and your weight. This can easily be determined though. The most important thing is not to go under your own "minimum", not lose weight to quickly, exercice and eat healthy.
