Advice help for a newcomer to swimming

I'm kinda new and getting into swimming, and i've worked out hard for about 2 years, not lifted smart, and have gotten frequent tendonitis, especially when i started working remodeling with my dad.
Needless to say, i've not lifted for almost a year, not religiously anyway, to help let myself heal and not be run down.

In the meantime, i've gotten into swimming, and i was going to join a team once i've been training for a decent amount of time with a girl i've known since the 6th grade who is on the ladies swim team.

I'm about 4 weeks shy of turning 18, and i'm naturally small. I'm not necessarily skin and bone, but i'm not big and bulky either.

I'm in between skinny and average would be my best guess.

But on top of swimming, I really liked boxing, and my papaw used to box in his younger days and even told me i should try and get into it. I'm choosing swimming over it though, because i know that if i swim, then boxing would only tax on my shoulders and i'd most likely wind up on the sidelines with an injury.
That's what i thought, if i'm wrong please tell me.

The advice i'm asking for though, is something i could do for self defense. When i was a freshman, i got bullied and picked on by a boy who played football and lifted and was bigger than me. At the time, i was skin and bone, and i didn't even try and fight back.
I'm still small, but not as small. I'd like to do something to learn how to defend myself, but i'm not sure what i could do that wouldn't be too hard on me and wouldn't hinder my swim training.

Any ideas?
