Adopting to new lifestyle, need to lose weight

Hi, I have always been playing hockey very seiously at very high levels and this has helped me keeping a good shape. I was about 5'11 and 180 pounds, but this year, I stopped playing hockey and I have been gaining weight at an incredible rate, I'm 215 so far.

Alot of this weight is due to alcohol and junk food, but there is also a little bit of muscle as I trained not regularly during the winter like 2 months of training and then 3 months off etc...

I'd like to know what kind of advices and trick you would have for me concerning the motivation, because before, when I was training, I had the goal to play in the NHL and this was pushing me so hard, but now there is nothing that really motivates me in being in a good shape except being well in my skin and look good.

Also, I'm currently sitting at 215 so far as I said, but my physical condition is very good, I'm not getting exhausted fast etc... I'm just fat. Mostly it's in the belly region and the ass.

I never really went on a diet as I though it wasn't necessary as my body was in very good shape, but now I'm really considering it because I need changes in my life if I want to keep a good shape. I'd like to have some references to sites or diet program that helped you lose weight.

Any advices are welcome, Thank you

I don't think you should "go on a diet" either. :) In fact I HATE the mentality of "going on a diet". Becuase, think about it .. if you go on a diet, that implies that at some point you can go off the diet right? And people play that mind game with themselves all the time. They think they can "diet" for a little bit and then stop dieting and go back to whatever they were doing ... and everything will be ok.

Instead of thinking of a diet as something you "go on" and "go off," start thinking of your diet as it's meant to be defined: How you eat.

There's nothing wrong with alcohol or junk food - as long as it's a TREAT or small portion of your diet and not the focus of your diet. I personally subscribe to the 90/10 rule. The treats and sweets and drinks should be 10% of my overall diet. The rest of the time I eat healthy foods. I avoid packaged foods, I eat veggies, lean proteins, healthy carbs and whole grains. I have a drink or a treat maybe once a week. Sometimes my treat will be lunch at 5 Guys ... burger, fries, and a coke. Sometimes my treat will be chocolate brownies for dessert. But it's once a week, not every day. As I said, 90/10.

So I'd suggest that's where you start. STart thinking about eating healthy meals made of real food, and limit the junk to once a week.

Emotion

Thanks for your post,

Ok, let's take a moment now to focus on the emotion behind your motivation. When you were playing hockey, you had a passion, a strong passion that naturally helped you to set goals along the way for you to find success.

Ask yourself at this time also some of the following questions:

What were my dominant feelings during that time?

What were my dominant thoughts during that time?

What were my dominant beliefs during that time?

What can I do now to create the same or similar thoughts, feelings and beliefs as then?

The fact is that all of your motivation comes from you, you are motivated by pain and pleasure. If you have enough of either pain or pleasure it will motivate you to move - and right now!

This may sound harsh, but at the moment it sounds like you are on the road to being motivated by pain, you talk of the weight gain, the not feeling as good etc, but my friend, you are not far gone enough yet to get up and say "ENOUGH!!!! I NEED TO DO SOMETHING!!!" - My strong suggestion here is to not get to that point in the first place.

Do what you know already and that is to get up and move your body today and make a conscious choice to be motivated, don't wait for pain nor pleasure to come your way.

Any more information just drop me a line ; )

Goal wise:How about finding another goal? Set yourself to run your city's half-marathon for example.
I find that forgetting you're on a diet is the key to avoid becoming frustrated, angry and then ending up comfort eating.

Diet wise: I agree that changing your diet is the key. Of course not doing so drastically unless you have a heck of a strong will, else you might end up resenting it or craving junk.

I personally dont follow such a strict diet as KaraCooks, I pretty much have desert everyday but try find equally tasty but less fat ones. But I dont eat at junk places anymore.

It's all about making eating time = pleasure time. Nice location, nice people around, good food. Not dirty old mcdonalds. People that diet often end up hating dinner time and generally eating and that often leads to cravings and binging. Keep eating... fun!

When I go out I look forward to it so eat less the rest of the day. I don't lose weight fast but it does drop off!

=P there my tips.. hehe for all they're worth

I'm assigned in the night shift. Since then, I haven't been to the gym or even done some exercises. Poor me.
