(CNN) -- When Alex Veith was 11 years old, he was in a bad spot.

He was 30 pounds overweight, and blood tests showed he was headed toward Type 2 diabetes. His parents say Alex was already physically active and eating a healthy diet. They didn't know what to do.

Their pediatrician didn't know either, so she referred Lisa and Hank Veith to Dr. Fuad Ziai, a pediatric endocrinologist in nearby Oak Lawn, Illinois. In the summer before Alex entered sixth grade, Ziai prescribed Adderall, an amphetamine used to treat attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. Alex didn't have ADHD, but one of the drug's common side effects is weight loss. And that's what happened to Alex.

"You should have seen everyone when I went back to school the next year. They didn't believe it was me," says Alex. "It was a great feeling to be a thin kid."

Ziai's approach to treating obesity -- he says he has prescribed Adderall for weight loss to about 800 children and teens -- raises an important ethical question: Has the obesity epidemic among children become so severe that it's OK to prescribe a drug not approved for weight loss when the drug can have serious, sometimes life-threatening side effects? (Interactive: What is Adderall? )

The Veiths say they'd give their son Adderall again. Now 17, Alex is a normal weight after being on the drug for more than four years -- from age 11 until about 18 months ago.

Lisa Veith says she was distressed about her son's weight. She didn't want him to develop diabetes, and she didn't want him to be teased. "I didn't want him to face what could come as kids turn into teenagers. I know how brutal kids can be," she says. "I just didn't want my child to go through that."

Alex says the Adderall cut his appetite in half. Drugs for ADHD are in the amphetamine family and are well-known appetite suppressants. "I didn't get the urge to eat as often," Alex says. "It seemed like I was always full."

Ziai says about 90 percent of his patients on Adderall have lost weight. He credits Adderall (along with a prescription for Glucophage, a diabetes medication) with helping Alex and many others avert diabetes.

The Food and Drug Administration has not approved ADHD drugs like Adderall for weight loss, but it's legal, and common, for doctors to prescribe medications "off label."

Several pediatricians contacted by CNN say they suspect other pediatricians are prescribing ADHD medications off label for weight loss. "No one admits it," says Dr. John Lantos, professor of pediatrics at the University of Chicago. "It's morally and medically questionable, so I don't think anyone's proud of doing this."

The Food and Drug Administration warns that some patients on ADHD drugs with pre-existing heart problems have suffered sudden death. The agency also warns that some on Adderall develop psychiatric problems, such as hearing voices and becoming manic. Pediatricians like Lantos say it's wrong to prescribe Adderall for weight loss when risks are known and the benefits are questionable. The drug has never been studied for weight loss, so they suggest that Ziai's success stories may be anecdotal. "Doctors who prescribe this could end up killing kids by giving them a medication that doesn't work for the reason they're prescribing," Lantos says.

Ziai says he screens his patients for heart problems, and none of his patients on Adderall has had cardiovascular side effects. He says about 2 percent of his patients on Adderall have had psychiatric side effects -- mood swings, irritability, crying for no reason -- but most patients are fine after he lowers the dose and then later raises it again.

Ziai says Adderall is the only option for many of his overweight kids. "Prior to the administration of the medication, there was no solution available medically for these children," he says. "In my experience, this is a very rewarding and very effective approach."

He adds that he knows other doctors are critical. "I respect their opinions, but I'm sure I'd be very happy to have them review the cases that we've had," he says.

Lisa Veith counts her son as one of Ziai's success stories. "He told us it was given for ADHD," she says. "We felt comfortable with what he was doing. We didn't give it a second guess."

I don't know a lot about ADHD, except what I know when a former colleague had her child on it for two weeks - then had her kid removed from it when she accidentally took the kids medicine... and realized that it was basically speed...

Sure a kid would lose weight while i never took speed myself, I remember popping diet pills in college to stay awake for all nighter cram sessions... and the jittery feeling I got for that.

Medicating a kid isn't the answer - educate the child... and the parents... not throw a pill at it...

I am the biggest anti-medication person onthe planet - I know it's necessary in some cases, but it should be a last resort - not a bandaid - fix the problem...

I remember some kids at my high school would get Adderall from someone who had ADHD to pull an all-nighter for studying or before a test or something. It helped them "focus." This is the first I've heard of it being used for weight loss, though.

Oh god. More drugs for our kids. Honestly, there must be a better way to fix the problem of obesity in children.
How about better nutrition & exercise?

GRRRR I wish something else can be done for kids besides DRUGS!!
I have put my son off on going to the doctors because of all the medications
they throw kids on these day,I don't want my son to turn into a zombie or
have 10x's more energy than he does now BUT what do you do I was told natural methods such a prgrams with disapline and football was 1 mentioned
I have had him in football for about a month and a 1/2 now and no different he is still mean and ontop now he tackles his sisters and kids I babysit instead of throwing toys and pushing it is still BAD.
Ok my son lies to I know what your thinkgin alot of kids lie but not like this EXAMPLE his coach asked him what the toothfairy brought him and he says $10 and a huge watergun NOWAY where did he come up with that he got a 1 dollar ok then we were playing outside and his friend rides by on jis bike and asks what are you doing DALLAS he says I am waiting for my cousin to go home it was the boy I babysit he isn't our cousin and he knows that so you see these are petty lies can you imagine what I go through when kids are crieng and saying he hit them or ok my daughters fried said he was humping her on the way home from school and just last year he almost pushed his sister out the upstairs window the glass broke and all thank god not a cut on her and she didn't fall when asking him why he replied she wouldn't let me in her room so I pushed her I didn't meat for her to fall that far.
Then the next minute mommy I love you, your the best mommy now he is starting to get SAD FACES on his daily school sheet as in raises hand before yelling out and listens and quiet in the halls.
I don't know what he has wrong but there is something and it';s been going on and getting worse since 2.
Ok sorry for the long story but it saddens me into not knowing whjat to do,Tammy

Eh, i was one of the adderall teens when i first started high school. I started doing poorly in school around the 7th grade, i managed to get up to high school before i demanded some extra help. I was prescribed Adderall XL(about a year of it) then the normal adderall. I can tell you that with this you dont want to eat, but it made me a hermit. I became deeply involved with my studies, i didnt know when to have fun and when to learn. At lunch i began sitting by myself outside reading, or doing my homework.

I went from being slightly social, to trying to hide from all my friends so they wouldnt bother me while i was reading. Little noises in class from everyone used to piss me off because i felt like they were distracting me. My personallity changed and i became deeply depressed because i felt like this drug had stolen my personality and turned me into a robot.

I used to have some indept poems about how it made me feel when i was on it, but ive lost the notebook i kept all my writings in.

although the medicine did help me in school, there are other alternatives to helping with ADHD. I cant believe they're prescribing this for a case such as obesity. This drug should NOT be used with two intentions, because it can have a big affect on you mentally.

If you're not ADHD and you take this medicine, it will often cause you to become very angry, moody, scatter brained and so on.

my senior year of high school i quit taking the medicine on my own without telling anyone, i was tired of being what i referred to as a 'Zombie'.

I feel so sorry for the children that get prescribed this medicine, i felt that as a person it overall changed me for the worse, and eventually led to more weight gain to do disowning all my friends, becoming depressed, and eating out of boredom and sadness.

=[ But its just like all the kids that got addicted to ritalin, and even began killing themselves after taken off of it.

I think there needs to be more study of ADD/ADHD in children and more research on the alternatives and natural ways subdue the ADHD beast lurking within.

Edit: Niapage, how old is your son?

I can't believe someone would KILL themselves due to Adderall or Ritalin Withdrawal! I took Adderall for about a year ( I did not have ADHD. I asked the doctor to give me something to help me study and he prescribed it!), and I also tried Ritalin recreationally. I quite Adderall cold Turkey, and the withdrawals aren't that intense. You feel very lazy and somewhat irritable for the first week, but then it starts getting better. I was completely over the withdrawals within about a couple of weeks. They're not nearly bad enough to make you think of killing yourself.

Oh and one more thing. Adderall stopped working completely after about 4 months. I took it for the next 8 months because it became a habit. It was just like my morning coffee. The "high" and elevated mood actually stopped a lot earlier than that. You need to continue to increase dosage every few months to overcome your body's increased tolerance to amphetamines.

I also tried Adderall XR (not sure if it's the same as the XL one that EmptyxBook mentions) but it prevented me from ever sleeping. I had hard time sleeping even on normal Adderall.

As for weight loss, it suppressed my appetite severely for the first month. I lost about 15 pounds that month, but then my appetite was back and I regained all of the weight. So maybe it keeps working with others, but it did not with me.

Overall, a terrible experience no matter how you look at it.

I just read that in a magazine article - not only do they use adhd drugs, but others as well - prozac combined with metformin (a diabetes med.) and many more.

I think they are always looking for the "cure" in a bottle instead of just telling people it's about what they eat and how they take care of their body. :sigh:

I take Metformin ( not for weight loss though).. and some of the side effects have been horrid. If its hard on me, I can't imagine what he would feel like to them if they are taking it! ( Metformin has a high % rate on certain side effects)

I got diagnosed with add and was prescribed adderall and I lost about 35 lbs in 6 weeks but after the side effects like not being hungry wore off and I gained some back but ya it sucks that their turning to this
