I really love milk shakes. I haven't drunk any since I started my diet. But I am really missing them and I think that it would be difficult for me to resist if I went to a fast food restaurant again. Are there any light options of milk shakes? Maybe anyone has a great recipe which I could try at home and which isn't too high on calories! That would be so great!
 
How about replacing them with smoothies instead? Lots of milkshakes are made with ice cream, which is terrible for your diet because it's sugar and fat put together.

As far as resisting temptation goes, if fast food makes you want them, why not avoid fast food altogether?

Here's a recipe for a lowfat milkshake, though:

1 c. cold water
2 pkgs. Equal
1 frozen banana, sliced
4 lg. strawberries, frozen
4 ice cubes
1/3 c. non-fat dry milk powder

Place all ingredients into blender. Blend well. Pour in glasses and serve. Calories: 105 per glass.

YES! loads of them. too many ways to list.

I think the best way to go is buy lowfat/fatfree no sugar added/sugar free ice cream and blend it in the blender with skim milk.

'Turkey Hill Dutch Chocolate Fat Free No Sugar Added' is pretty good for milk shakes.

and also Blue Bunny makes a number of Fat Free No Sugar Added popsicles and Ice creams.
(I'd recommend the chocolate or strawberry)

another good thing to try is ice coffee with more skim milk than coffee and some splenda. and another, adding smuckers fat free no sugar added fudge or caramel to skim milk.

Experiment :)

(oh .. but never go for anything like slim fast or any of those "diet shakes" most of those are pure fat and sugar being marketed as "healthy.")
 
I have a hard time passing on a good vanilla milkshake. Maybe it's just a habit or addiction or whatever you wnt to call it. Maybe your body is trying to tell you something. Have you taken notice of how much dairy/ calcium you're eating? Your body may want more and since your favorite source of dairy is a milkshake thats what you go for. Like others have suggested, try low fat or non fat versions of milkshakes, throw some fruit in for good measure. Try some vanilla soy milk as well.

I know it's a test to your will power but you can do it. It feels like you neeeeeedddd a milkshake, but maybe you just need a glass of skim milk and to shake your booty more often. Just don't do the shaking right after the milk. :biggrinjester:
 
Thank you so much for all your great ideas! I didn't know that there were so many light options! And I also like fruit; so I am going to try maverick's recipe tonight. By the way do you know which is the approximate difference concerning the calories of a regular milk shake and such a light alternative?
 
If you order a size small milkshake on occasion, it's not going to kill you:)

Treating yourself every now and then is a good thing. :hurray: You don't want to deprive your body of the stuff you consider irresistible. Today, the serving size is huge and wtf? So, ordering a small sound be sufficient to kill your taste buds.

Well actually I don't believe that I am able to drink delicious milk shakes and lose weight at the same time anymore. I mean these light options were okay but not comparable at all to a regular milk shake. Nevertheless I won't restart drinking regular shakes. My priority is losing weight and not gaining it...
 
I think after a while you will desire them less. I used to be addicted to Gatorade and Diet coke but now I only drink water. I have no desire for them now. Granted I've heard Texas water has lithium in it so I might have a new problem on my hands lol

Go to a local nutrition store and pick up some whey protein...and some nonfat milk


After exercising and such 1 cup of milk, some ice, and a scoop of whey protein should substitute in for your milkshake craving. Their are different whey protein flavors and you can control thickness of the shake at any time.

Virtually no fat or carbs and a high amount of protein never hurt anyone.

Whey protein= 24g protein, 4g carbs, 2g fat, 120kcals
NF Milk= 8g protein, 12g carbs, 0g fat, 80kcals
Thats only 200 calories +/- bananas, or other low fat carbs you can use to thicken

You know what, I'm addicted to milkshakes too. Not just plain however, I enjoy a chocolate concrete milkshake with hot fudge and cookie dough. This is my usual meal at about ten o' clock after I've just exhausted myself during a basketball game. I do get the smallest size, and I KNOW it's not good for me, but I have it so rarely. I never feel guilty and thankfully, now that I've given up chocolate for Lent, I can't have one for forty days.

I'm going to try the smoothie recipe aforementioned now. It sounds DELICIOUS!!
 
you might want to look into getting frappes also, its basicly a cup of ice cubes, then covered in milk, they put the lot into a blender and flavour it. Its ice cold milk, you cant tell that more than half it was made with water either.
Just beware that you ask for no cream (they often put a cup of cream on top!) and ask for trim milk or something.
Most cafes or takeaways do the frappe thing too which is double bonus :)
