Accutane for acne

has anyone here tried using accutane to control acne breakouts. they say it is effective i would like to use it but are worried that it has many side effects.

No, I haven't. I use the Aveeno line and have found it to be quiet effective. Give it a try, it's a little pricey, but not in comparison to prescription stuff. I use the entire line of their products...bath, facial, shaving creame, you name it I've got it. :) I've recently fallen in love with their blemish fading cream.

I've never had acne bad enough to even want to consider trying Accutane... but even if I did.. the side effects and the warnings on it I'm not sure the risks are worth the rewards.

Accutane is some hardcore stuff.. I know of one woman who was using it and has since stopped.. She had to be on two different forms of birth control while using it (and they make you sign something to that effect because if you are of child bearing age.. the risks of birth defects are enormous) plus (and this was why she stopped) she went from being a very mentally stable person to major depression and thoughts of suicide.

It's scary stuff...

 DAAAANG! I'm definitely sticking with my Aveeno!

Wow, how did that stuff ever get FDA approval?

I use Clear & Clear Invisible Blemish Treatment, the active ingredient is Salicylic Acid. It works really well for accute outbreaks... like that giant mountian on my chin right now :p

Any drug on the market has some bizarre side effects... check out drugs.com if you happen to be taking anything... :D It's really kind of scary... Some side effects dont bother people and they're fine.. other not so much...

The birth defects the doctors are well aware of and they do make you sign something that you will use a primary and backup method of birth control.

But in Accutane's defence... it is a "wonder drug". It's not meant for people who get the unsightly blemish every few weeks.. it's really designed for people who won'tleave the house because their skin is so broken out all the time...

I had a friend in high school who was put on birth control pills her skin was so bad... I think she would have taken any risk if accutane was available then...

hey people. thanks for the reply. anyway i am interested with that acne product from clean and clear. i am just wondering if it is also the clean and clear invicible acne patch?

This one is what I was talking about:

I've not used the patches but I really like the clean & clear collection, it does well. Good Luck!

You're right mal, every pill has side effects. Just seems weird to have all that with an acne pill - but admittedly, I've not had more than a few acute outbreaks of acne so I don't know what it's like to need one.

hmm. Yes ive been on accutane, and it did me pretty Damn good. I had cystic acne, u know the kind that looks like a big bubble on your face? Ive also had fulminans, but i dont think anyone here knows what the hell im talking about :p Ok so, if you have mild acne, and its just a few pimples like 5-10 i wouldnt reccomend it. Now, when you go on it, your lips WILL turn dry, over 90% of patients get it, most likely you will too. My lips were pretty dry, vaseline did me good. keep in mind that accutane can make you depressed, but in MOST cases it doesnt. It made me happier than usual!! theres some serious side effects that can take place while on/after youve taken the drug.

My husband had really bad acne when he was about 17yrs. old (now 26) and they had him on soo many different things trying to get rid of it...finally they put him on acutane and it worked incredibly good. His doctors told him he would probly have another bout of acne in 5yrs. and about a year ago he started to get some acne again. He decided to go back to the doctor and they said that it isnt severe so they gave him some cream to use for now when he gets little breakouts.
Acutane works wonders but yes it does have side effects...the new doctor that he went to said they wont put anyone on acutane and it is only used as a last resort. Kinda makes you wonder how its out there in the first place but that goes along with every other medicine thats out there that lists a ton of side effects.
Just thought id let ya know it does work like a charm.

Have you tried the clear skin regimine?

It's basically a regimine where you use a lot of benzoyl peroxide and then a lot of moisterizer to counteract the drying that the benzoyl peroxide causes. I have heard from people on a make-up forum I belong to that it really works (as long as you're not allergic to benzoyl peroxide). I haven't tried it yet but it sounds like it would work and I do plan on trying it. You can find more info here
