Abs 3 times Per Week

So right now I train my abs on Mon and Thurs, and I would say I train them pretty hard. However, I was thinking about adding in Wednesday which would have me working out my abs Mon, Wed, and Friday. Is this too much? I know abs are like any other muscle and shouldn't be overtrained, but I would go rather light on Wednesday and I'd still be getting 48 hours of rest in between each time I worked them out. Thanks for any feedback, I appreciate it.

Hey jewfro,

There shouldn't be a problem with training your abs 3 days per week... can you give us a few more details about how many reps, sets, and exercises you do for your abs? Also, what is the rest of your training like? Do you typically do full-body workouts or split workouts?

Absolutely. I pretty much do the following:

mon & thurs: Chest, triceps, abs
tues & fri: shoulders, back, legs, biceps
**I'll do sprints and plyometrics on my off days usually.

In terms of my ab workout (which I am currently doing mon & thurs), I'll do something along the lines of the following:

2x12 decline abs sit-up with 15 lb weight behind head

2x10 windshield wipers (that's what I call them. I hang from a pull up bar with my feet in the air, toes pointed towards the ceiling, and make a windshield wiping motion)

3x10 ab wheel (gym doesnt have the wheel so I put two 10lb weights on a small barbell)

3x15 leg raises (or 3x10 with ankle weights)

oblique planks

That's about it for abs. I know it sounds like a lot (or maybe not), not sure if it's too much though. Obviously if I did add in the 3rd day I would do about half of that.

Thanks for the response and any other feedback. I really appreciate it.

I really need to start asking this question first, but, what are your fitness goals? Increased strength? Muscle size? 6-pack? General health?

I don't think doing your abs 3 days per week would be problematic, but you might want to reduce the number of exercises... the question would be why are you working your abs 2 days per week, but your other muscle groups only once per week each?

Well I guess those are all my goals haha. I'd like to increase my strength, have a 6-pack, and have good general health.

I would reduce the number of exercised on the middle day, and maybe reduce the number of sets on the other days by a couple (total). And as of now I am not working my abs twice a week and my other muscle groups only once per week. I'm working abs twice and other muscle groups twice.

Chest, tris, abs, on Monday and Thursday

Legs, shoulders, back, Tuesday and Friday.

Thanks again for the help.

Sorry, I guess I didn't read carefully enough! I would say, give it a try for a while and see what the results are... If you're really wanting to see the 6-pack, you may need to make sure that your diet is clean, depending on what it currently looks like. You can do all the ab exercises you want, but if your diet isn't great, then you'll likely never see those abs!
