I have been doing intermittent fasting for like 7 months. I’m in Dallas and wish I had others to maybe form a group or meet with. Also I am wondering how long a person should keep this up? I’m feeling alone and often hungry, tired and frustrated. No one else I know does this. I also stopped drinking over 6 months ago. I have lost 25 pounds and achieved a normal BMI. For that I am thankfu!. Thanks.

hi Rob... i have been on an iF schedule for about 19 months now. most days i'm now on a 16/8 schedule, but i can't say i don't have some 14/10 or even a 12/12 day occasionally (like yesterday). it took me about 6 months to lose ~50 lbs and since then i have used it to merely maintain a BMI between 22 (as low as i ever got) to just under 24 where i am now. i have pretty much accepted hunger as a recurring urge that i often just ignore. even when doing a multi-day fast, there are hardly any stretches more than a few minutes that i feel a hunger attack. it's not like i'm suffering all day.

i tend to look at it this way... humans have evolved over thousands of years to rely on our natural senses to keep us alive. hunger is our mind reminding our bodies that it needs nourishment. now put an evolutionary sense like that into a modern society where food is not only easy to find, but plentiful. and don't forget to add in the modern innovations in food processing, most insidiously, the introduction of high fructose corn syrup into our diets.

there is no doubt left by all statistical measurement that, at least in this country, the general population is getting larger. it would be great if physical fitness would become a national priority again.

Overlandflyer that is a great observation and way of thinking that closely matches my own thoughts and experiences. I do 20 fasting hours and 4 eating about 6 days a week. I often do OMAD as well. Anyway a big part of my frustration is that with all this I have not kept losing and I fear if I ever returned to my old ways I would quickly gain again.

Hi Rob, welcome to the forum and congratulations on being dry and losing a very respectable amount of weight! If you´re still at the higher end of a healthy bmi (which I assume if you still want to lose weight): have you changed the kind of foods you consume during your eating window? I am quite capable of eating more than body´s daily needs in a single sitting and IF or not doing so regularly would lead to weight gain. Or maybe your food intake has stayed the same and your now smaller body simply needs less energy to sustain itself than your old body did.

i cut off the "i fear" part because i don't really fear it, but i know it would happen.

it was hard for me to set a goal when i first started intermittent fasting. actually i did set a goal, which was to lose about 30 lbs, but i wound up blowing right through that weight and down another 20. reading between your lines, i suppose i also thought i would just keep losing weight, but it seems like i have hit a point where my physical activity pretty much matches my calorie intake give or take a fraction. even when i extend my eating window like i said i did just yesterday, it wasn't that i ate any more than i typically do, but i just stretched it out over a few more hours.

a while back i decided that maintenance should keep me between a BMI of 23 and 24.... about a 7 lb range.

20/4 is sort of extreme. do you really go nuts on that 7th day? 20/4 days ... basically OMaD days to me... are what usually turns into a 14/10 day. in six hours i say, what the hell, and have another small meal. as long as i get at least 14 hours fasting / day, i know i'm giving my digestive system the rest it needs and lowering my insulin level to a fat burning state for at least a few hours/ day. have to say it seems to be working.

Hey Rob, welcome! And good work getting to where you are.

I don't do IF, but you have Flyer's attention, he is our resident IF expert. You will find others here too who are doing IF.

Overlandflyer,

I find the 20/4 to be ok usually but def not always easy. During hard times in our lives I feel this lifestyle is more suitable. I do need to focus more on healthy eating and OMAD is good for me about once a week. I am so used to intermittent fasting now that if I eat 3 meals on the seventh day I can get sick, believe it or not.
