Ab Belts?

Hi,
First post here. I have started at a local gym about 2 months ago, going 3 times a week. Starting to really notice a difference in my muscle definition etc and am reallt happy with the results so far. The question is do Ab belts and similar products work? I am looking to wear the belt on my days off from the gym in the hope of having a nice set of abs and pecs as i have problems doing sits up and stuff due to a bad back. Also i've read reviews and it seems the Rio Ab Belt is the best in terms of price and quality, however this is only a belt and doesn't have extra pads to work on my chest - will it have the same effect if i move the belt up to my chest or will this pose problems? Thanks in advance and sorry for the lengthy post!!

Come on, someone must know something about it?!

I have never used one, but I can only assume that using it on your days off will do more harm than good.

But I can tell you this: it is sciebtifically not as effective as other exercises such as crunches, so you will need to do somethign else besides use the belt if you want to get abs.

I dont see why they wouldnt work on other msucles - the principle is the same - just be careful not to put it over your heart!!

Yes. Don't use the ab belts. If you want to throw your money down the toilet, don't. Send it to me via personal check :).

Of all the ab gadgets out there I'd recommend only one. The little ab wheel gadget, I bought one for 7.99 at Target.

And you can actually just put 45 plates on each side of a barbbell and use the barbbell as your ab roller if you're really cheap :)

So no, don't buy the ab belts. They don't work. They typically don't even provide enough of an electrical stimulation to cause any adaptations in the muscle.

i got one, they're too weak

I got one.

They don't work on thier own.

Their main use is after a heavy workout to push out some more. If does hurt but only if you've worked out the area heavily beforehand. Otherwise I've had it going on max for >2 hours and had little effect.

Don't spend more then £10 / $16 on one. They're not worth it. I'm not even sure they're available at this price.

Oh, and the batteries get used far too quick, even rechargeables.

Oh, and they're usually uncomfortable.

But they are very useful in teaching you to tense specific areas such as your abs, so could be very useful for boxing /martial arts.

I concur with jasondragon. Don't waste your money. There is a reason the FTC came down hard on them. Used properly, the basic wheel, stability ball, and other exercises are just fine.
