I need to change for the better. I need to lose weight for my mental state and to become a fitter, heather me. I am 25 years old and I have autism. On New Years day I weighed myself and I was 17:8, I weighed myself this morning and I was 16:11 so I have started well. I would like to get to 12 stone

Welcome to the forum Sam

Hi Sam and welcome to the diaries :) Sounds like you´re off to a good start already and you´re losing weight at a very healthy pace. Do you have a specific plan you´re sticking to or are you winging it?
Best of luck, LaMa.

What's changed? Are you snacking more, moving less or generally making poor food choices?

I'm sorry to hear that. Do you have any possibilities to deal with unpleasant thought that don't involve calories? Talking to someone (relatives, friends, a counsellor) going for a walk, lifting weights, cleaning a little bit of your living space, planning out a dream, having a bath... Most of us have a tendency try and eat our worries (people who don't are usually slim) but stuff always happens so we need to find healthier coping mechanisms. Overeating is better than drinking alcohol or gambling but in the end it isn't helpful either.

I don't know that it's possible to just will yourself into happiness. For me happiness is a result of doing things I enjoy, doing things I see as valuable, spending time with people I like who treat me well, getting enough exercise/rest, and not delving too deeply into things I can't change (mainly politics and current affairs).

Hi, Sam. I'm sorry you are feeling sad. When I'm feeling sad or even slightly down I make sure I get some exercise, preferably outdoors, eat as healthy as I can & definitely, like LaMa, don't dwell on the things I just cannot change. I think most of us have had or still have a tendency to overeat or eat the wrong things when we get down, but that just makes us feel worse & doesn't fix anything.
You have not gone back to being 17:8 & that is good. Are you able to talk to someone about feeling down & maybe get some counselling? It helped me a lot about 10 years ago. My self-esteem was very low, even after losing my excess weight & seeing a counsellor really helped put things into perspective.
Typing in your diary regularly might help a little in the meantime.

I don't have much to ad regarding feeling down other than to say Maria and Cate have some excellent advice.
