I think this is a nutrition question which is why im posting it here, I apologise in advance if its in the wrong place.

Anyway, my fingernails have started getting these strange grooves and ridges running along the length of the nail from the root to the tip (?) of my nails.

I was initially worried I wasnt getting enough calcium but I take a multivitimin + minerals supplement everyday, have semi skimmed milk on my cerial everyday, have low fat yogurt around 4 times a week and eat cheese about twice a week so surely im getting enough calcium from that?

Anyway this is my diet so if you guys can spot anything I may be deficent in that might be causeing this please let me know.

Breakfast: 2 wheetabix with raisens and semi skimmed milk

Lunch: Ham sandwich with salad on brown bread

Dinner: Varies, includes pasta bake topped with cheese
stir fried mushroom, peppers, carrots, chicken or ham, and brown rice
home made pizza topped with chicken or ham and peppers and mushrooms
Fish with oven chips and steamed mixed veg
chicken burgers in brown baps with salad
Lasagne

Snacks: yogurt, apples, strawberries occasionally a little (I really mean a little) chocolate

I hope that was enough information!

Google can be your best friend or your worst enemy - so take this with that proverbial grain of salt...

Horizontal ridges on nails can indicate severe stress (both psychological or physical).
Vertical ridges on nails indicate poor general health, poor nutrient absorption, and the ridges may also indicate a kidney disorder.

Most other websites say it's a natural part of aging - and vitamin e oil or jojoba oil can help a lot. I just started growing my nails last year (after a life time of biting them) and I do use an jojoba oil to massage into them a few days a week - and it does seem to help (I spent 15 hours a day in front of a computer - and have very little breakage from the pounding they take on the keyboard)

Vertical Ridges are also characteristic of aging, although are not limited to the aged or elderly. The nail plate grows forward on the nail bed in a 'rail and groove' effect, much like a train rides on its' tracks. As we age, the natural oil and moisture levels decline in the nail plate, and this rail and groove effect becomes apparent. Ridged nails will improve through re-hydration of the nail plate with twice daily applications of a good quality nail and cuticle oil containing Jojoba and Vitamin E.

Brittle Nails are characterized by a vertical splitting or separation of the nail plate layers at the distal (free) edge of the nail plate. In most cases, nail splitting and vertical ridges are characteristic of the natural aging process. This nail problem is also the result of overexposure to water and chemical solvents such as household cleaning solutions. As we age, the nail bed's natural flow of oils and moisture is greatly reduced. This oil and moisture is the cement that holds the nail plate layers together and gives the plate its inherent flexibility. At the first signs of splitting or peeling, re-hydrate the nail plate layers with a good quality cuticle and nail oil that contains Jojoba and Vitamin E as two of the botanical oils. Jojoba oil has a very tiny molecule which can penetrate the nail plate surface, open up the layers and draw the Vitamin E in after it. The molecular structure of Vitamin E is too large to penetrate the nail plate layers or the surface layer of the skin without the benefits of Jojoba oil. Oil the nail plate and surrounding cuticle at least twice daily; more if you have your hands in water a lot. Wear gloves whenever working with household cleaning solutions, and remember: water is considered the 'universal solvent', and is indeed a 'chemical'
(there are some pictures on the website)

Mal: Gosh some of those pictures where pretty grusome! Looking at those makes me think maybe my nails arnt so bad :D

Some good information there though, hopefully its not ageing (im only 19!) but I will be trying to find some jojoba and vit E cream.

Im at University doing a degree in computer systems and networks so I spend practically all day typing too so maybe thats got something to do with it.

Also I wash my hands, very often, its just a thing... Not nessisarily a bad thing but it seems to wash a away the oils.

Thanks for the help!

sally hanson, in the nail care section - sells a cuticle and nail oil that you can brush on your nails. that does help a lot... I'll brush it on - massage it in - and then not touoch anything for 30 minutes :)

Thanks il look out for that, I think I have some vitimin E cream somewhere, il dig it out and use it untill I have chance to go shopping!

I have psoriasis and have the same thing happen to my nails. The doctor said it was part of the condition. It may be something to do with your skin for all I know, but I thought I would let you know I have the same thing happening to my nails and what the doctor told me.
It sucks though, you can't really put nail polish on, it makes it look all weird!

Crumbs, psoriasis, kidney disorders, maybe il mention this to my doc next time I go there. I havnt been wearing nails polish for ages incase it made it worse...

Vitamin B deficency? il google what you can eat to get more vitamin B

Thanks again guys!

psoriasis you'd probably know you have... most folks I know who have it -it's a skin condition that looks like a rash...

One of the good things about the internet is you can find anything - one of the bad things about the internet is you can find anything.... I could give myself a fatal disease on a daily basis without much effort :)

There was an episode of House that the male patient was convinced he had fibromyalgia :) Pretty funny stuff.

Vitamin B, from what I've read is the little vitamin that could... B6 and B12 are also good for symptoms of PMS as long as you take it regularly - i think it's tough to find in food -least usinbg the tracker I use- I"m never near what it should be - but a multi vitamin will give you enough (however if you take too much, you pee almost a flourescent yellow :) oooh party tricks :D

Indeed, you dont have to go very far to find completly conflicting information on the Internet! And since it doesnt take much to churn out a pretty professional looking website anybody could set themselves up telling people theres an epidemic of fibromyalgia... :p

I take a multivit so I guess im probly ok, I think our ketchup bottle also says contains vit B... :D

Found my vitamin E hand and nail cream from the Body Shop in the bottom of a drawer, used it today and I think its helping a bit, maybe its just my imagination lol.
