A Newbie with a Question

Hello - I live in the US and I joined this site when I read a couple of the threads and liked what I saw in way of replies. I am 5'7 (~171cm) and around 140lbs (~63.5kg) and I'm not sure how much weight I need to lose to be healthy. I do look like I have a bit of baggage going on but it's minimal. I'd love to know what a true healthy weight for someone my height is and if at all possible, the best exercises for overall toning are that don't involve going to a gym. I already walk/jog (I alternate during the trip) 5 miles every other day and swim twice a week.

Answer, if you are male you are underweight and if you are female, you are only off maybe 5 pounds. either way, I don't think it's 'weight' you are looking for, but muscle and tone.

You exercise, I assume you have been to a doctor for physicals, and if you are not putting a bunch of crap food on your plate...then guess what? You are healthy already.

I'm female. From what I understand, with a waistline of 32 inches and hip measurement of 37 inches compared to a neck measurement of 13 inches, I have a high body fat percentage. My absolute goal weight, in my own head, is around 130 or so. I just don't know how to go about trimmimg down my midsection if I already exercise and don't eat like a pig. I think I consume maybe 1400 calories on any given day.

Well, here is the thing. You can't target fat. It will come off and on based on genetics. No exercise will remove it specificly. The only way is to change your diet to create a calorie gap between in and out.

Also, I had to guess what your waist at the narrowest point it but you have about 30% body fat. For women, that is acceptable (thought not far from obese). My biggest worry is if you are truthful about how many calories you take in (and likely you aren't cause we all aren't. We underestimate all the time). If you really are eating 1400 and doing the jobbing/walker you say then you don't have much room at all to cut calories.

If you're not losing weight, then you're not consuming 1400 calories.

At your height and weight and with the amount of exercise you do, there's no way you'd be maintaining on 1400 calories. I suspect that you're eating a lot more than you think you are. Most people do.

I'd suggest registering for a free account on or and starting to log your food. This will let you see how many calories you're eating and how your nutrition levels are breaking down. Once you know that, you'll be able to see more clearly where you can make adjustments, cut back, change your nutrition, etc.

I keep a food journal, where I keep track of calorie content. I definitely eat roughly 1400 calories in any given day. I guess I didn't sound too sure on my previous post, now that I re-read it. I said "I think" because I had a ballpark idea but never bothered to average it out; sometimes it might be 50-100 over - or under. (I include sauces, dressings, etc.) To explain why I even have a food journal or why an average 1400 is maintainable for me, I have had a disorder for years that directly affected how much I ate (I had no appetite); I am being treated for it and have only recently overcome the lack of appetite hurdle, so my caloric intake versus the weight I gain from it is still not at an equilibrium. My body is in hoard mode a lot of the time, from what I've been told. I am still not entirely clear what a "healthy" weight for someone my height is, despite discussions with my doctor over my lack of appetite/weight loss/etc. I have seen weight charts, but I was assuming that because there are people on here that might know a thing or two about what is realistic I might get a better frame of reference. The doctor told me anywhere from 125-150 is safe for someone my height and that I am healthy now, but that is a huge range and I don't feel very comfortable after being 120 or less for so long (when I didn't have an appetite). When I got my appetite back, my weight shot up to 140 and I am just not used to this extra baggage I've got going on. All I'm asking for are some decent exercises that might help me, DEFINITELY not calorie-reduction or diet modification in any way.

m or f?

Just a quick question are you a guy or a lady? In that way we can know if your sex matches the desired weight..Thank you.

The answer is no then.

There is no exercise that will target just hte 'baggage'.

However, if you look at the exercise forum, they can help you with the toning part.

Alright - and thank you for your previous answer, too!

Might I suggest reading the Exercise section since that is where you need to get some information? If you aren't changing your diet and you want to lose fat, you have to increase the calories burned. You are also looking for toning and those guys in that section know what they are talking about.
