a little football help

whad up all,

hey everybody, i was wondering if u guys could help me with something. I am currently 15 turning 16 in may and am a starting defensive end/ offensive guard. Theyve got me playing both waise, im pretty good but not as good as i know i could be. I have dreams of one day playing in the nfl but its gunna be hard cuz i live in Canada and we dont get many Americane scouts. Anyways i have powerfull legs and good drive. What i think i need the most help on is acceleration, overall speed, arm strength and stamina. I hope to one day play linebacker so i need to become alot faster.

We ran the 40 for tryouts but coach desided to keep it secret so i dont really know my 40 time. Im pretty agile ( as far some foot work drills are concernd). I can vertically leg press about 320-350 (15 reps and 3 sets0. I am about 5'11 or 6'0 and about 230. Im a big boy but i know i could be a great linebacker plz help me. I will check back tomorow thanx in advance

bye

Well, you are a bit short to be a linebacker in the NFL - but you might grow more (I didn't after that age, but everyone is different). Maybe strong safety for you?

About the workout... For acceleration, don't ignore the running. I know this is in the weights section, but sprints will probably help you more with acceleration than squats will. Don't ignore the squats though - cause you need the strength as well as the speed.

As you are a teenager, I would suggest that you just keep doing a fairly well rounded workout of weights and cardio. It might not maximize what you do in high school, but it will give you a better basis to build on and will probably server you better in the long run than trying to focus too much at this point. Focus in college and the pros!

If you want to become a faster runner, you have to run...simple as that, specific adaptation to imposed demands. Sprint training is the definite way to go, but don't disregard that your spint training will need to be different depending on which position you play. Find out which position you are aiming for or realistically can/will be playing. Get your body to the weight you need, then remember to include the power phase in your training. I have a friend who is 6'0" and 228 lbs and played linebacker, so don't despair ;)
