Right, maybe somebody around here can help.

Firstly, a kind of weird thing that has been happening to me for ages: When I eat fresh bread, I get the hiccups. Really, really bad, painful ones. The same thing happens when I eat raw potatoes, sometimes with burgers (I'm guessing it's the buns), and today I noticed that the same thing happenened when I had salad made from carrots and apple. I can't figure out what is causing it, but it is really annoying, and really painful. Any ideas anybody?

Secondly, has anybody ever heard of people being hypersensitive or even allergic to sweeteners? No matter what kind...for one thing, I seem to be able to taste them instantly, to me they taste horrible, too sweet with a bitter aftertaste. I tried all of them, even the ones that are supposedly made from 'refined' sugar - no difference. If there is any kind of sweetener, I can taste it.
Additionally, if I eat or drink anything with sweeteners, I get headaches nearly instantly, together with the runs....I know that sweeteners in large doses can work as a laxative, but for me, a spoonful of Splenda or anything like that already does that.
Has anybody ever heard of that before, any experiences? I tried the web, but couldn't really find anything useful...just wondering if it is something that happens to others, or if I'm just plain and simply weird?! *lol*

You eat raw potatoes?

I'd talk to a doctor about what you're experiencing -keeping a very very detailed food diary -with what you're eating -and how you're feeling physically after you eat it...

It could be food allergies... wheat/soy/gluten allergies are fairly common...

As for artifical sweeteners - avoiding them isn't a bad thing - in fact long term it's probably a good thing...headaches I've heard of people getting -and the solution is - don't have them...

Yes, I do. While peeling them or something, I do eat them raw. Is that bad?

Other than that, I think I will do that. I have been checked for common allergies, but never for food allergies...maybe it's time for that.

And that's what I'm doing...just avoiding sweeteners. I heard they aren't too healthy anyway...

Thanks for the advice! :)

I had always heard that raw potatoes were bad for you...however when in doubt - google

Is it safe to eat raw potatoes?
Yes, raw potatoes are not toxic, with the exception of the green parts. These may contain toxic levels of solanin. Raw potatoes, however, may cause flatulence in many people.

Hmm...I've eaten them for the past 30 years or so, and I'm still alive...and no flatulence either....*lol*...never heard that they were supposed to be dangerous. Learn something new every day!

Google says lots of people get hiccups from eating bread, but no one knows exactly what the mechanism for that is. Eating more slowly / chewing more thoroughly / taking a sip of water to wash things down are suggested as possible solutions.

Carrots and french fries (there's your potato!) also seem to be common triggers.

Do you get heartburn with it?

I got that for a while. It felt like I had a lump in my throat and then I started to get panic attacks with a similiar sensation. It was very strange. I didn't get it from eating bread or anything though.

No, no heartburn with it. Just hiccups, but really bad, rather painful. I got the advice to do the slow chewing etc., and I tried it, but it doesn't seem to matter if I go slow or wolf it down, it's always the same thing. I'll keep an eye on it and actually see what foods trigger it, and then see my doc and ask. Maybe there's a good explanation for it....who knows?

:iagree: I bet you have a sensitivity to something in the foods that you may be eating, go get an allergy test and maybe some of your questions could be answered...

Well, I booked in for a food allergy test at my GP, but of course it takes a while to get it done...*sigh*

And what's the problem with raw potatoes?? I have eaten them ever since I got my first teeth, and to this day, when I peel potatoes, I will have a few pieces raw. I'm alive, reasonably healthy, and I doubt that my extra weight comes from the few potatoes, so where's the harm?? :Angel_anim:
