72 year old bodybuilder

The most impressive part is he doesn't eat meat or fish.

i thought the most impressive part was that he looks that good, and the only free weight exercise it showed him doing was dumbell curls...

oh and he lifts 1 hour 6 days a week?

Pb, regaurdless of what most people parrot, using more than 50% machines will make you look better than freeweight exercises. It allows you to isolate the show muscles, and almost eliminate the stabilizers. Which is great if you just wanna look good or if you have injuries.

wait...mreik...are you being serious, or sarcastic?
machines help you isolate the show muscles and are great if you want to look good?
this is all in referance to an advanced/semi-advanced body builder, right?

Serious, yeah, and yeah. :)

You're an old enough lifter where I can tell you Santa doesn't exist lol..

lmao...well, do you use machines, mreik?
iv always been told the only worth while machines are the seated rowing machines...but how does a machine standing cable curl compare to a barbell curl? less stabalizers?

I've recently switched my routine to incorporate more machines.. Although I'm in it for the long haul, so to avoid injury I keep the big compound movements as the core of my routine.

Yeah, think about your elbow. There's no where for it to go, you've got your arm and the weight in your hand pushing down. Leaving much less opportunity for movement other than the desired. And of coarse you could mimic the same perfect form with free weights but it would require many other muscles, taking attention away from the agonist.

IMO, I think machines have a place in every BBr's routine. And they can play a role in a PLr but not nearly as much or as often, usually helping with injuries and weak points.

hmm...i guess i was dissuaded and disregarded machines the day i read
"dont do the machines"
in NROL.
i always wondered why i always see huge guys(professional bbs...think ronnie coleman) doing the machines...

but would you agree that the compound lifts like benching/squatting should be left to the free weights? the benching machines are soooo easy...and a smith squat just doesnt feel the same

I believe that freeweight deads/bench/squats sould always be done, but machine squats/bench are great exercises. I know that's exactly what helped me really fill out my chest when it was lagging to everything.

My football coach told me that you can't be 100% freeweight, or 100% machine; a mixture of both is the best combination.

You can use to smith machine for speed training. Like take 50% of your max on the smith machine bench press and explode that sucker up and wait till it comes down and catch it.

That's the thing about fitness, just about everything has it's place, depending on your goals.

There isn't one RIGHT way (like only freeweights) for everyone. Personally, I love that.

lOLZorZ Mreik uses da machines!! Hiz da n00bz!

Yeah, machines can definitly have their place. It all depends on goals. Alot of machines are less intense for your CNS too, since you don't have to coordinate so much. That way you can give your muscles some extra volume training without having to fry your CNS.

Be MEAN be your own fricken MACHINE!

Yep! Im full of the little dude syndrome, yep it all belong to me.......Mean, lean and a fricken machine! and so is everyone else............
