5x5 routine, Thoughts?

I've just recently started the 5x5 routine. I'm hoping it will be beneficial. I was just curious as to what you guys/gals thought about it? I know that its more for building muscular size, rather than definition, and from what I have read is known for being the "old school" way to lift and gain mass. I believe it originated in the 1940's or something like that when Reg Park stated it. However Bill Starr included it in one of his books.

I'm starting a new log intended for weight loss, and definition, but I wanted to throw in a few muscle size increase excersies as well. I figured I would do a 5x5 routine for Bench, squats and military press. Everything else will be lower weight, higher reps. Anyways....

Heres some info on it for those that arent familiar with it.

I'm not looking to be the next body builder. I have some pretty broad shoulders, and significant upper body strength as is, but I'd like to be a little bigger. Do you think this routine would make sense? Or should I stick to a higher rep routine until I lose some of my excess weight?

lose excess weight or fat??

remember, by lifting, especially 5x5, you'll be burning fat and building mass!

There is no "best" routine. Pretty much everything works to a point as long as you put effort into it. 5x5 does have a tendency to work rather well, though.

if your on a defecit you wont gain any muscle (unless your a newbie) but 5x5 is a good routine for maintaining your muscle and losing some fat,as long as yor diet is bang on.

But Buzz... I'm looking for teh sekretz!!!11 I know you ppl have teh routine that is best for all levels of fitness. Specificity don't mean ****, yo!

:p

5x5 doesn't do much for muscular endurance so it is not a free lunch.

Correct, That why I only planned on doing it with squat, bench, military press. I would do a higher rep for basically everything else. Not to mention, push ups, pull ups, and other body-weight excercises will help with muscular endurance. :)

but then you talk about muscle endurance, what do you want size/strength,or muscle endurance.

I tried this concept in my strength class the other night, and it just about killed them ;) They thought I was crazy only doing 5 reps -- until they got to that last set :D
