5k Training ideas

I am looking to possibly run my first 5k this spring. It's actually in May and I wondered what I should do for training? Last summer, I was running 4+ miles. I just strarted up again recently, although not doing 4+ miles. I have been doing about half that. I got on the treadmill today and, since I don't know how fast I go, I just put the speed at a comfortable pace and it was 5.5 at an incline of at least 5. What should I work on? Speed? Stamina?

I'd head out and get . I started out doing 5-10K races, training mostly by myself and getting info from what I could pick up from friends and newsgroups. That worked out just fine but then I went from doing those distances to a half-marathon and just sort of tried to wing it with my own home-made training schedule. I finished the race, but I didn't train properly and wound up injuring my right knee (it was never quite right again after that race).

After that, someone pointed me to Galloway, which explained how to train for various distances against whatever time you're shooting for. I trained for and ran my first marathon according to his tables/formulas and it worked like clockwork. It's a great investment if you think that you might enjoy running long term.

Good luck with your first 5K!

I hope it helps you out and inspires you! He lays out this formula/chart that shows exactly how much to run on each day so that you can work your way to running x miles in some designated time. I remember that when I first read it, I thought that it sounded crap--how could that work? But it did and in doing all of that via his book, I understood where I went wrong with my own home-made training for that half-marathon.

By the way, if you wind up getting hooked on running and if you get to the point where you don't know what to do with all of the race tee shirts, in the 90s, I met some people who turned their shirts into quilts! I'm not the sewing type, but I always thought that that was an amazing idea. What a great souvenir!

Best of luck and I hope you have a ton of fun training and running!

good info on the book. I can always use some new training ideas, and my first 5k for the season is in early may as well. :D
