3 meals a day

I'm not counting calories any more. I have 3 meals a day. Then I have 2 servings of low carb yogurt, too. My meals are what I know now to be normal sized portions. I used to calorie count so I know what the right size portions are approximately. So far I have lost 47 pounds. I stopped counting calories awhile back. I have one serving at a time now. I've heard it said that protein portions should be no bigger than the size of your palm and veggie portions no bigger than your fist and that the entire meal no bigger than the size of your head. Sounds kind of weird. I'm not really on a low carb plan.

HI there,

actually I heard something similar. The protein portion was the same, but I think the veggie portion was either your whole hand or twice the size of the protein. And I have never heard the statement about the size of your head, but why not...it's a measurement you can relate to:)

Congratulations on your 47lbs!

I eat as many veggies as I want. I don't see any need to cut back on them, so long as they aren't made with butter or anything similar.
I have no qualms with polishing off a whole can of green beans or a full cucumber at a time. The calories are so miniscule - 70 in the greeen beans or under 25 in the cucumber - that I just don't see an issue.
I have, however, heard about the protein thing.

I think counting calories is great for beginners like myself because it is a good reality check. After I get the hang of portion size and recognize which foods contain the most calories I can have a snack or two with out having to add up the calories because by then I will be used to having an apple or orange instead of a Baby Ruth. Untill I see some progress in the form of reduced weight I'm counting every calorie.

Counting Calories

Yes, counting calories can be very effective - but at the same time frustrating. I'm pretty sure everyone has been there and done that. But if you insist on monitoring your intake be sure to take advantage of all the great resources at They provide a lot of really good info and tools.
